Hong Kong Pavilion First Show in China International Cartoon & Animation Festival
Under the sponsorship of “Creation in Hong Kong” of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, “Hong Kong Pavilion” has its first show in the ongoing 20th China International Cartoon & Animation Festival in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province with over 20 IPs and dozens of creative products. In recent years, the animation and game industry in the Chinese mainland has developed vigorously, and top-level works have emerged on the international stage in the game sector. Constrained by the market size, the animation industry in Hong Kong is currently facing development difficulties. For outstanding works to expand the market, closer cooperation with the mainland is imperative.
The comic market in Hong Kong has been shrinking. The sensory stimulation provided by E-entertainment is beyond the reach of comics. Coupled with the shortage of human resources, it is now strenuous to produce comics. Judging from the development trend of the animation industry in the mainland, the source of many IPs often comes from comics or novels, and the breakout point is mostly in animations, while the recovery point and monetization lie in video games and peripheral toys. In the past, companies and works from Hong Kong have always had difficulties entering the mainland market, and animation and game companies in Hong Kong generally have a poor understanding of business operations in the mainland.
Animation and game enterprises in Hong Kong are accustomed to small-scale production methods targeting the international market. But on the other hand, due to local market limitations, Hong Kong companies can basically only remain at the scale of small and medium-sized companies, with insufficient basic productivity, preventing their works from detonating in a timely manner and causing opportunities to be lost.
During this event, the Hong Kong Pavilion showcased over 20 IPs and dozens of creative products. These products are not only novel in design and highly practical but also reflect the unique charm of the creative industry in Hong Kong. Outstanding works from “Hong Kong Comics Power”, such as “Graffiti Master” and “Cat Masked Boy”, were exhibited. The animation “Silili&Tree”, a VR work that won an award at the international animation competition Digicon6 Asia, was also presented. There were also 3-meter large sculptures and various works from the trendy toy representative “Ape Creations”. In recent years, comics, animations, games, and the recent trendy toys from Hong Kong have won many awards at the international level and achieved numerous remarkable results, proving that the works from Hong Kong have internationally recognized standards.
