Across all genres, 2023 featured outstanding game highlights that thrilled fans in Germany and around the world. The eventful year of major new releases is reflected in game – The German Games Industry Association’s annual charts of the best-selling games for PCs and game consoles released in 2023. The annual charts are headed by the football simulation ‘EA SPORTS FC 24’ (Electronic Arts), which in 2023 appeared for the first time under the new series title and, from its release in September, consistently achieved top 3 rankings in the German monthly charts. The magic open-world game ‘Hogwarts Legacy’ (Warner Bros. Games), from the ‘Harry Potter’ universe, captured second place in the annual charts. This is followed in third place by the long-awaited ‘Diablo IV’ (Activision Blizzard), the new instalment in the RPG series of the same name. Just two months after its publication in November, the action-packed first-person shooter ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III’ (Activision Blizzard) finished the year in fourth place. Fifth place in the annual charts was secured by another action-adventure success story, ‘The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom’ (Nintendo), which continues the tale of the well-known protagonists Link and Princess Zelda. And a German production once again made the annual rankings: the specially developed console version of the city-building strategy game ‘Anno 1800: Console Edition’ (Ubisoft), which was remastered for the console gaming experience.

Information on the annual charts
The annual charts for 2023 list the games released that year for PCs and game consoles that were most often sold – physically and digitally, across platforms – in Germany in 2023. The data is gathered by Games Sales Data (GSD), a platform operated by Video Games Europe (VGE). Digital sales of Nintendo titles from the Nintendo eShop are not included. As the respective publishers are not currently participating in GSD, the games “Alan Wake 2” and “Baldur’s Gate 3” are not included.
