Blackmagic Design ships DaVinci Resolve for iPad

Blackmagic Design has released DaVinci Resolve for iPad, the new edition of the video editing, effects and colour grading software for Apple tablets.
The iPad edition features “the same color correction and editing tools used on Hollywood films”.
Like the desktop version, the base edition of the software is free; DaVinci Resolve Studio for iPad, the paid edition, which adds AI-based tools based on DaVinci Neural Engine, costs $94.99.
A new edition of the video editing and colour grading software optimised for iPad Pro
Announced during the launch of Apple’s 2022 iPad and iPad Pro models earlier this year, DaVinci Resolve for iPad brings the formerly desktop-only video editing and grading software to mobile.
The new edition reworks Resolve for use on a smaller tablet screen – although you can connect Apple’s Studio and Pro XDR displays – and supports the Apple Pencil and Magic Keyboard for input.
Although it runs on standard iPads, it is “optimised for iPad Pro” models with Apple’s M1 and M2 chips.
Includes key features from DaVinci Resolve 18.0
At the time of writing, we can’t find a feature list for the iPad edition on Blackmagic Design’s website, but the firm says that it features “the same color correction and editing tools used on Hollywood films”.
Blackmagic Design’s tweet announcing the release namechecks features added in DaVinci Resolve 18.0, this year’s major update to the software, including multi-user collaboration system Blackmagic Cloud.
Project files created on iPad are also “fully compatible” with DaVinci Resolve 18 on desktop.
Some limitations compared to the desktop edition
However, there are some restrictions compared to the desktop edition, including a smaller set of supported video formats and codecs: the iPad edition supports ProRes, H.264, H.265 and Blackmagic RAW.
As on desktop, the base edition of the software is free, with a paid upgrade to DaVinci Resolve Studio, which adds advanced features, including AI-based tools powered by DaVinci Neural Engine.
In the case of the iPad edition, the upgrade to Studio costs $94.99, compared to $295 on desktop.
Release date, pricing and system requirements
DaVinci Resolve for iPad is compatible with iPadOs 16.0+. It requires an iPad with an A12 chip – introduced in 8th generation iPads in 2020 – although it is “optimised for the iPad Pro with M1 and M2 chips”.
Earlier models and iPad models “with memory limitations” have “limited functionality available”.
The base edition of the app is free; DaVinci Resolve Studio for iPad is a one-time $94.99 in-app payment.
