Minions & Monsters Sets 2026 Release, Iconic IP Ventures into Hollywood’s Silent Film Era

Universal Pictures and Illumination have officially announced that Minions & Monsters, the third standalone film in the Minions series, will debut in theaters worldwide on July 1, 2026. Directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Pierre Coffin—who also provides the voices for the Minions—with a screenplay by Brian Lynch, the iconic yellow crew will travel back to 1920s Hollywood for the first time, kicking off a cross-era farce triggered by a monster movie.

According to insider sources, the film will achieve a historic time jump for the Despicable Me franchise—three iconic Minions, Kevin, Stuart, and Bob, will accidentally find themselves in a 1920s Hollywood film studio. While attempting to participate in the making of a monster movie, they inadvertently summon a real monster, setting off a chain of chaos. This marks not only the first time the series is set in the early 20th century but also introduces a new visual style through the collision of silent film aesthetics and vibrant animation.

Director Pierre Coffin stated, “Placing the Minions in Hollywood’s golden age is a crazy idea, but it’s precisely this anachronism that unleashes the rawest comedic energy.” Coffin, who has voiced the Minions globally since 2010, will continue to bring the characters to life with his unique “Minionese” language.

Upgraded Production Matrix
The film is produced by Illumination founder Chris Meledandri and Bill Ryan, producer of The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The production team revealed that the film will maintain the series’ signature slapstick style while delving deeper into the social dynamics of the Minion community. The 1920s Hollywood setting not only offers rich visual elements but also playfully pays homage to the early film industry.

Screenwriter Brian Lynch, known for hits like The Secret Life of Pets, shared in an interview, “This adventure will showcase the Minions’ adaptability—and destructiveness—when faced with an entirely new cultural environment, as both often occur simultaneously.”

As the seventh installment in the Despicable Me franchise, the film will further expand the IP’s narrative dimensions. Universal’s previously announced streaming window agreement indicates that the film will stream exclusively on Peacock for four months after its theatrical release, then move to Netflix for ten months, before returning to Peacock to complete its distribution cycle.

Notably, Illumination is also developing another Despicable Me spinoff, signaling the ongoing expansion of the IP universe. To date, the Despicable Me franchise has grossed over $4.6 billion globally, with annual merchandise sales related to the Minions consistently exceeding $1 billion.

The Yellow Trump Card of the Summer Box Office
Originally scheduled for June 30, 2027, the film was moved up to the summer of 2026, taking over the slot previously reserved for Shrek 5. Analysts note that this move reflects Universal’s strategic adjustment in the family entertainment market—amid schedule changes for several Disney and Pixar releases, the stability of the Minions IP has become a significant competitive advantage.

With the release of the first trailer and promotional posters, this century-spanning yellow adventure has already sparked global anticipation. As superhero fatigue spreads, whether these banana-loving, mysteriously chattering yellow creatures can once again stir up a global box office storm remains one of the biggest suspense points of the summer 2026 season.
