On June 29, the 14th National Fine Arts Exhibition (hereinafter referred to as the “National Art Exhibition”)- exhibition of Chinese painting opened in the new hall of Guangzhou Art Museum (Guangzhou Art Museum). This exhibition is the first exhibition of the 13 exhibition areas of the 14th National Art Exhibition. The results of the re-evaluation of works in the exhibition of Chinese painting  area of this National Art Exhibition were officially announced recently, and a total of 698 works were pitched, including 103 works in Beijing. According to statistics, a total of 49 works from Guangdong were selected, ranking third in the country, of which 14 works from Beijing ranked first in the country.

The five-yearly National Art Exhibition was born at the time of the founding of New China, and with the development of the Republic, it is currently the largest national comprehensive art exhibition with the widest range of participation, the most types of works and the most influential.  It has received the active participation of the vast number of artists and extensive attention from all walks of life.

This year’s exhibition of Chinese painting  received a total of 1296 works selected by provinces, autonomous regions, municipalities and Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps and troops for re-evaluation, and a total of 698 works were selected, including 103 works in Beijing.

Guangdong has many experiences in hosting the national art exhibition area, from the 6th to the 13th. As the first exhibition area of the 14th National Art Exhibition, Lin LAN, chairman of the Guangdong Provincial Art Association, said that in previous national art exhibitions, Guangdong Province has been held as a national art exhibition area for many times, and Guangdong Province attaches great importance to cultural undertakings. In the past just one year, nearly 300,000 square meters of public art museums have stood in the Bay Area. Opened at the end of November last year, the new museum covers an area of more than 30,000 square meters, with a total construction area of nearly 80,000 square meters, which can fully display the selected works. At the same time, Guangdong Province has done a lot of preparatory work, including exhibition organization, creative organization and so on.

This exhibition presents the contemporary Chinese painters adhering to the artistic concept of integrity and innovation, constantly innovating and developing on the basis of inheriting the tradition, and actively exploring the various possibilities of contemporary Chinese painting.

First of all, the subject matter of the work has been significantly enriched and expanded. Over the past five years, the vast number of artists have set their feet on the solid ground and dug deep into the fertile soil of life, seeking artistic inspiration from the great creations of contemporary China, drawing nourishment from the great practices and colorful lives of the people, and capturing the vicissitudes of The Times in an artistic way. With novel ideas, unique perspectives and innovative language, they portrayed the magnificent scenery of the motherland, praised the achievements of the development of the motherland, and depicted the spirit of the people in pursuit of a better life, focusing on the themes of the changes of The Times, national rejuvenation, people’s happiness, and national prosperity.

The second is the further development of Chinese painting materials and language. While inheriting the essence of traditional painting, Chinese painters in the new era, on the one hand, rooted in the innovative consciousness of the spirit of traditional ink and brush, strive to realize the creative transformation and innovative development of traditional Chinese painting through multi-dimensional research and learning of traditional art categories, and create works with both traditional charm and era flavor. On the other hand, in the application of colors, materials and concepts, it actively absorbs and integrates modern visual elements, reflects the modern value of traditional ink and brush through innovative perspectives and techniques, expands the performance boundary of Chinese painting, and promotes the transformation of traditional painting language to modernization.

The “National Art Exhibition” held every five years has become the most important art event in the art world, with high specifications and great influence, which is difficult for any other art exhibition to match. In other words, the “National Art Exhibition” held every five years is like a wind vane, which indicates the direction of creation in the future.
