PlatinumGames’ New Title Confirmed to Use Unreal Engine 5, Signaling a Potential Shift in Visual Style

PlatinumGames, the acclaimed developer behind classics such as Bayonetta and NieR:Automata, has been actively expanding its portfolio recently. Alongside collaborating with Team Ninja on Ninja Gaiden 4 and participating in the development of Konami’s Metal Gear Solid 3: Remake, the studio is now recruiting talent for an original new project. Latest job listings reveal that the upcoming title will be developed using Unreal Engine 5 for the first time, with an aim to achieve “photorealistic” visuals—marking a significant shift in the studio’s technical and artistic direction.

According to a report by foreign media outlet Tech4Gamers, PlatinumGames’ recent job posting for an environment artist explicitly lists “experience with Unreal Engine 5” as a mandatory requirement and mentions that the project is pursuing “photorealistic quality.” These two points stand in clear contrast to the studio’s past preference for stylized visuals (as seen in Ninja Gaiden 4) and its longstanding tradition of relying on in-house engines.

This technological transition may be influenced by industry trends and the studio’s own strategic development. Currently, several major international studios, including CD Projekt Red and BioWare, have adopted Unreal Engine 5 to reduce development costs and enhance graphical performance. For PlatinumGames, which has undergone team adjustments in recent years, adopting a mature commercial engine could help optimize resource allocation and advance project development more efficiently.

It is worth noting that PlatinumGames has already gained experience with Unreal Engine 5 through its involvement in Metal Gear Solid 3: Remake, laying a foundation for the engine transition in its own new project. While reviving classic action aesthetics with Ninja Gaiden 4 and deepening collaborations with publishers like Konami, the studio is simultaneously developing a nextgen enginepowered title—demonstrating its commitment to solidifying its leadership in action games while actively exploring new technical and visual frontiers.
