As development scales and marketing investments continue to rise, the commercial breakeven threshold for AAA games has increased significantly. According to veteran game producer and former EA and Activision production lead Bryan Walker, development costs for a high-quality AAA game today “easily reach nine figures,” meaning budgets exceeding $100 million (approximately ¥708 million RMB) have become the norm. Due to revenue sharing on major platforms, refunds, and other operational costs, such titles need to sell around 6 million copies to break even.

This figure reflects the严峻 reality of the current AAA gaming market: even with conservative budgets, the pressure to recoup costs far exceeds that of previous eras. Walker further noted that the actual costs for most AAA projects are typically two to three times the $100 million benchmark, meaning many titles must sell over 10 million copies to become profitable. In this context, where sales alone struggle to cover costs, developers are increasingly relying on recurring revenue models such as battle passes, in-game microtransactions, and DLC content.

“Platform revenue sharing is a key factor affecting profit structures,” Walker explained. “Digital channels typically take around 30% of revenue, while physical retail often commands an even higher share.” Additionally, player refunds can lead to approximately 15% revenue loss, both of which must be factored into project financial assessments.

As a result, the live-service model has become a major trend in AAA development. Through seasonal updates, content expansions, and community activities, games can generate continuous revenue after launch, alleviating the financial pressure from high upfront development investments. This also explains why an increasing number of traditionally single-player titles are adopting service-oriented designs.

Industry analysis points out that the surge in development costs stems not only from advancements in visual technology and content volume but also from globalized marketing, multi-platform adaptation, and ongoing content update investments. In this environment, the ability to build a healthy diversified revenue system has become a key determinant of a AAA project’s commercial success.

Despite the significant challenges, Walker remains optimistic about industry innovation. He emphasized that successful IP management and deep engagement with player communities provide sustainable pathways for high-cost games.
