Recalling the animated version of Mulan, Ming-Na Wen said that when she knew that Disney would make a traditional Chinese story into an animated cartoon, she was surprised and thought it was a good thing: “It is fantastic to make a good character and Chinese folklore stories into other forms.” By adapting ancient Chinese folktales into Hollywood films, Wen praised Disney for respecting the original works: “The original story is retained – ‘Hoping to protect her father, a young girl stood on the battlefield bravely and became a heroine. The story has always been so powerful. I have been to some animation exhibitions, where many people came for SHIELD and Melinda May, but there were also many women and girls coming to me for “Mulan” I dubbed. Ming-Na Wen also said: Thankfully, Asia / Asians related content is a hot topic in Hollywood because of “Crazy Rich Asians”!” She also starred in “The Joy Luck Club” (released in 1993) – the first movie made by mainstream movie companies and starred by Asians on Chinese-Americans. She said that she was proud to represent Chinese Americans in the film.

Now that Asians have made some achievements in Hollywood, Ming-Na Wen thinks it is very good. “In Hollywood, it is always about money, so if you can make money, they will take the initiative to find you. The film companies can make money through producing films that present positive outlooks of Asians instead of stereotypes, which is a progress.”
