Tokyo Anime Award Festival 2026 Global Submission Opens: Gathering Global Creativity, Building the Future of Animation Together

March is the season for animation. Alongside the Tokyo International Anime Fair (AnimeJapan), the Tokyo Anime Award Festival (TAAF) is set to be another international animation event, grandly taking place from March 13 to 16, 2026 in Ikebukuro, Tokyo. The festival is organized by the Association of Japanese Animations and the TAAF Executive Committee, co-hosted by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. It is dedicated to showcasing high-quality animation works from around the world, inspiring creators, nurturing emerging talent, and promoting international exchange and development in animation culture and industry.
Since its separation from the Tokyo International Anime Fair in 2014, the Tokyo Anime Award Festival has consistently positioned itself as “TOKYO – The Hub of Contemporary Animation,” focusing on discovering and cultivating new global animation talents and facilitating the cross-border dissemination of animation culture. This year’s festival will continue to spotlight two main competition categories: Feature Animation (60 minutes or longer) and Short Animation (30 minutes or less), with awards including:
- Grand Prize (one feature and one short, 500,000 JPY)
- Award of Excellence (one feature and one short, 100,000 JPY)
- Best Student Film (short animation category, 100,000 JPY)
Currently, the 2026 festival has received 39 feature animation submissions from 31 countries and regions, and 997 short animation submissions from 71 countries and regions. After preliminary evaluation, 27 works have been selected for the competition (including 4 feature films and 23 short films). The final award results will be announced during the festival.
The Tokyo Anime Award Festival is not only a platform for showcasing works but also an international hub for interaction among animation enthusiasts, creators, and industry professionals. All selected works will be presented with Japanese and English subtitles, and some screenings will be open to the public for ticket purchase. Audiences can buy single-session tickets through official channels to experience the charm of animation art from around the world firsthand.
As a significant event in the global animation industry, the Tokyo Anime Award Festival continues to inject vitality into the development of animation art and industry. We look forward to more outstanding submissions from China and around the world, collectively pushing the boundaries of animation creation and making Tokyo once again a center for international animation cultural exchange and innovation.
