The Void Collaborates with ILM to Develop 5 VR Experiences Based on IP
The Void and Lucas Pictures’ ILM has reached a new agreement to develop five brand new experiences based on the IP of Walt Disney Animation Studios and Marvel Studios.
The Void also announced news of the first experience, which is based on “Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2” of Disney animation. The second experience is based on an undisclosed Marvel movie (which will premiere in 2019). Currently, Marvel’s pre-announced 2019 film includes “Captain Marvel”, “Spider-Man: Far From Home” and “Avengers:Endgame” while “Frozen 2” is the only movie that Walt Disney Animation will release next year (to be released in November of 2019).
Marvel is one of the most valuable source of IP in the world, who has expanded the cooperative partnership between The Void and Disney. It is worth mentioning that the two sides have cooperated to make “Star Wars” VR experience in 2017.
Both sides have signified that, at least for now, the future of VR belongs to the offline experience related to Hollywood IP, because this experience can attract fans to experience this new technology. Studios like Marvel and Disney are using VR as one of the programs to promote films, providing a new method for fans to experience the movie universe.
Curtis Hickman, founder and chief creative officer of The Void, pointed out: “Fundamentally, we will ask ourselves what kind of world the audience wants to enter and become part of, which has never been possible before. Fans of Disney and Marvel want to participate in the world through our technology.” Up to now, The Void has opened 11 stores in the US, Canada and the United Arab Emirates, and they further announced their expansion plans in June, intending to increase the total of stores to 17.
The media has widely reported about recent attempts to create “mixed reality experiences” for home use (including Magic Leap), but most have not achieved the desired effects. On the other hand, although the VR headset has already landed on the market, the mass market has not really accepted the technology. Currently, only companies like The Void can provide a complete immersive experience with 4D elements including temperature changes, wind, fog and odor to meet the growing demand for multi-person immersive experiences, such as the popular “Escape the Room”.
Successful experiences such as “Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire” and “Nicodemus: Demon of Evanishment” have been featured in theme parks, shopping centers, and even wax museums such as “Ghostbusters: Dimension Experience” at Madame Tussaud’s in New York. Most people usually experience VR for the first time in the Void store.
The only thing missing in The Void experience is the taste, but Hickman did not rule out this option. He said that with the continuous development of technology, including animation, visual effects and multimedia, “we will continue to build increasingly realistic experiences. Everything due to be there will mostly be there.”
