Pokémon Developer’s New Title “Beast of Reincarnation”: One Woman and Her Dog Against a Harsh Post-Apocalyptic World
When Emma and her loyal dog, Koo, embark on a journey across Japan, “Beast of Reincarnation” may at first glance seem familiar territory for Pokémon developer GAME FREAK—a story about “plants, animals, and nature.” That is, until you notice the post-apocalyptic devastation and the dazzling combo attacks Emma and Koo execute together to battle giant beasts and legions of deadly robots.
Scheduled for release in Summer 2026, this “one-person, one-dog action RPG” has already generated significant anticipation with its flashy combat and stunning post-apocalyptic setting. In a recent interview, Game Director Kota Furushima delved into the process of building this new RPG world and the power of canine companionship.

The Visual Philosophy of a Harsh World
Set in the year 4026, Japan has been consumed by a “Blight.” Cities lie in ruins, and dense forests conceal the remnants of humanity. “The Blight parasitizes all forms of life, transforming them into Malefacts (‘corrupted beings’), which in turn have brought about this ruined world,” explained Furushima. Emma herself is a “Blighted One” (perhaps related to her ivy-like hair), making her one of the few capable of confronting the spreading corruption.
“The world Emma and Koo travel through was always imagined as harsh and unforgiving. We wanted the world itself to stand as an enemy before them, constantly obstructing their path,” says Furushima. “To convey the severity of their journey, a stylized or cartoonish world felt inappropriate. We believed that a decayed environment depicted in a more realistic manner was necessary.” Japan itself is the backdrop for Emma’s journey because Game Freak’s developers can draw on their own experiences to help create the right atmosphere.
Visually and tonally, this is quite different from Pokémon, even if “Beast of Reincarnation” shares some familiar themes. To capture the world’s simultaneous “harshness and beauty,” the team decided to develop for consoles like Xbox Series X, PS5, and PC to achieve a more striking visual presentation. The “Blighted Forest,” which has spread across the land due to the Malefacts and a colossal creature called Nushi, was particularly crucial in shaping the game’s visual identity.
In this world, massive trees can grow in an instant, transforming open plains into dense forests before your eyes. Through this, we made it clear that the world itself is an enemy – and something the player must overcome,” Furushima stated. “Rather than focusing only on static visual beauty, we wanted to capture the dynamic moments of transition: the world shifting, changing, and moving. Those fleeting transformations allowed us to express its living, threatening presence..”

An Inseparable Battle Partner
Though described as a “one-person, one-dog” RPG, the journey in “Beast of Reincarnation” is far from lonely. Koo, Emma’s canine companion, is deeply involved in both combat and adventure throughout.
“Koo has been part of the project from the very beginning. When we first envisioned the emotions we wanted players to experience, the concept of a game centered on traveling with a companion naturally emerged,” Furushima shared. “Consequently, the game design, story, and even the world itself were all built on the premise of Koo’s presence.”
The combat system is distinctive: Emma engages in real-time sword-based action, while issuing commands to Koo slows time significantly, lending the game a turn-based strategic flavor reminiscent of Final Fantasy VII Remake. The two styles are not simply separate modes but are designed to synergize.
“When Emma parries enemy attacks, she earns points that can be used to activate Koo’s abilities,” Furushima explained. “Koo’s command menu can be opened at any time, allowing players to seamlessly switch between action and command-based combat.” This design ensures Koo’s presence is constantly felt, emphasizing that the journey is a shared narrative of their bond.
GAME FREAK’s Heritage and Evolution
“Beast of Reincarnation” shows promise as a compelling action RPG on its own merits. The fact that it comes from the developer behind Pokémon adds an extra layer of excitement. While this high-fidelity solo adventure differs vastly from the studio’s classic titles in many ways, as discussed during the Xbox Developer Direct, it carries forward the creative ethos honed over decades of development.
“Plants, animals, and nature” are core themes GAME FREAK aims to explore across its games. This holds true for Pokémon, but in “Beast of Reincarnation,” these themes are approached differently, blended with sci-fi elements through its 4026 futuristic Japan setting. The game grapples with themes similar to NieR:Automata, focusing on the meaning of survival and salvation in a distant future where “humanity” has become unrecognizable.
“Beast of Reincarnation” represents not only a bold technical leap for GAME FREAK but also a profound exploration of its creative philosophy in a new dimension. In this world of harshness and beauty, the journey of one woman and her dog is about to begin.
