Nintendo Raises Full-Year Forecast as First-Half Sales Surge 110% to ¥1.1 Trillion
Switch 2 Sales More Than Double Original Switch During Comparable Launch Period
Nintendo Co., Ltd. Recently announced its financial results for the first half of the fiscal year ending September 30, 2025. Driven by the strong performance of its new-generation console, the Switch 2, the company reported a 110% year-on-year surge in net sales, reaching ¥1.1 trillion (approximately $7.2 billion). In light of these robust results, Nintendo has raised its full-year earnings guidance.
Key Financial Figures
During the reporting period, operating profit increased by 19.5% year-on-year to ¥145.1 billion (approximately $950 million), while ordinary profit jumped 60.5% to ¥236 billion (approximately $1.5 billion). Total hardware sales reached 12.25 million units, and software sales totaled 82.18 million units.
Switch 2 Sets Milestone Records
Since its launch on June 5, 2025, the Switch 2 sold 10.36 million units worldwide within four months, more than doubling the sales of the original Switch during the same period in 2017. Notably, the new console sold 3.5 million units within its first four days, making it Nintendo’s fastest-selling hardware launch in history.
Although sales remained strong in the second quarter (July-September) at 4.54 million units, Nintendo highlighted that the Switch 2’s higher price point was a key factor driving the significant increase in overall sales. During the same period, Switch 2 software sales reached 20.62 million units, with Mario Kart World leading at 9.57 million units (including bundle sales), followed by Donkey Kong Bananza at 3.49 million units.
Original Switch Enters Late Stage of Lifecycle
In comparison, the original Switch series sold 1.89 million units in the first half of the fiscal year, with the OLED model accounting for the largest share (910,000 units). The series has now reached a lifetime global sales figure of 154 million units. Software sales for the Switch declined by 12.4% year-on-year to 61.56 million units. However, the company noted that as most Switch games are compatible with the new console, sales of classic titles remained stable—Mario Kart 8 Deluxe lifetime sales have been updated to 69.56 million units.
Diversified Business Segments Face Pressure
Sales of digital content decreased by 2.8% year-on-year to ¥155.5 billion (approximately $1.02 billion), primarily due to foreign exchange impacts and a decline in sales of download-only software. IP-related income also fell by 12.4% to ¥33.3 billion (approximately $216 million), attributed to cyclical adjustments in film-related revenue. It is worth noting that Nintendo announced in September that The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is set for release in April 2026.
Updated Outlook
Nintendo has raised its full-year net sales forecast to ¥2.25 trillion (approximately $14.6 billion), a 93.1% year-on-year increase, and operating profit expectations to ¥370 billion (approximately $2.4 billion), up 30.9%. The company projects full-year hardware sales of 19 million units for the Switch 2 and software sales of 48 million units. For the original Switch, it anticipates 4 million hardware units and 125 million software units to be sold.
