Newzoo’s 2026 PC & Console Gaming Report Now Live — Market Returns to Growth, But the Rules Have Changed

The global PC and console games market is projected to reach $103.7 billion by 2028, signaling the end of the industry’s post-pandemic revenue plateau. However, the drivers of growth are shifting from expanding playtime towards pricing strategy, monetization depth, and the reshaping of platform economics.
Newzoo, a leading games market research firm, today released its PC & Console Gaming Report 2026. The report reveals that 2025 marked the industry’s first year of significant post-pandemic revenue growth, with a 7% year-over-year increase, initiating a new cycle of consolidated nominal expansion through 2028.
Key Findings: Growth Returns, But Fundamentals Have Shifted
“Growth is returning to the market, but it’s being driven by different fundamentals than during the pandemic years,” said Manu Rosier, Director of Market Intelligence at Newzoo. “Hardware cycles are stretching, development costs are rising, and even proven franchises are no longer guaranteed to succeed. The rules that shaped the industry over the past two decades are changing. PC and console ecosystems are evolving in different directions.”
Key insights from the report include:
PC vs. Console: Divergent Growth Paths
PC Platform: The player base continues to expand, projected to exceed one billion by 2028. The Chinese market showed particular strength, growing 11.7% year-over-year in 2025. While the monetization structure remains microtransaction-led (48% of PC revenue), premium games became the main growth engine in 2025 (up 11.8% year-over-year). Notably, the share of PC playtime generated by “long-tail content” outside the top titles increased from 33% in 2022 to 42%, reflecting significantly enhanced ecosystem breadth.
Console Platform: Growth is slower compared to PC and remains highly concentrated around blockbuster releases and hardware cycles. Premium games account for roughly half of console revenue, growing approximately 12% year-over-year in 2025. Subscription revenue grew modestly, driven primarily by price increases and tier upgrades rather than subscriber base expansion. Free-to-play revenue declined faster than playtime.
Premium Spending Drives Growth in Western Markets
In major Western markets including the US, UK, Germany, France, Spain, and Italy, despite a decline in playtime, premium spending increased significantly in 2025:
Premium revenue on PC grew by 17.4% year-over-year.
Premium revenue on PlayStation grew by 7.8%.
Premium revenue on Xbox grew, but at a slower pace compared to other platforms, partly influenced by Game Pass altering player expectations.
Pricing Strategy Reshapes the Market Landscape
The report provides the first systematic analysis of market performance across different price tiers:
The $30–$50 Price Band: This has emerged as the fastest-growing tier across all platforms. Multiple titles, exemplified by ARC Raiders, have followed the successful model of HELLDIVERS 2, finding a “sweet spot” for cost-to-fun ratio between indie pricing and $70 AAA releases.
Sub-$30 Titles: These are capturing a larger share of PC spending. The number of sub-$30 titles generating over $5 million in revenue increased from 17 in 2024 to 26 in 2025. Schedule I, launched in the quieter month of March, even surpassed Minecraft’s PC revenue within the report’s scope, demonstrating that low-budget hits can still reach the top of revenue rankings.
The $50+ Segment: This remains console-led but is flattening on Xbox. PlayStation recorded 81 titles surpassing $5 million in revenue in 2025, equaling the number on PC. However, console revenue is heavily concentrated in annual sports titles, while PC achieves similar breadth through a more diverse player base.
Structural Industry Changes
The report highlights several noteworthy industry trends:
Several traditionally dominant genres (Shooter, Battle Royale, Sports) are experiencing structural decline, while growth segments like Sandbox are not fully absorbing the lost playtime.
The free-to-play market continues to contract, facing challenges in monetization efficiency.
New releases are increasingly substituting engagement from existing franchises rather than expanding total playtime.
Sandbox ecosystems, led by Roblox, continue their rise, challenging traditional AAA games.
Additional Deep-Dive Insights Coming Soon
In the coming weeks, Newzoo will release further in-depth analyses from the report, covering topics such as: the evolving monetization dynamics across the diminishing free-to-play market, what success looks like for games beyond the top 20 titles, the rise of Sandbox ecosystems and their industry impact, and signs of maturity in Shooter and Battle Royale engagement.
