Microsoft’s Xbox Platform Implements Age Verification Checks in the UK to Meet Online Safety Bill Requirements
Microsoft’s Xbox platform has begun implementing age verification checks in the UK to comply with the newly enacted Online Safety Bill. The bill requires companies hosting adult content, such as pornography, to verify users’ ages through bank information or government-issued identification.

London, UK – Microsoft has announced that its Xbox platform has started implementing age verification checks in the UK to ensure compliance with the new Online Safety Bill. The bill aims to enhance online safety, particularly for children and teenagers, by preventing them from accessing inappropriate content.
The Online Safety Bill mandates that all online service providers operating in the UK and hosting adult content must take effective measures to verify users’ ages. This means that Xbox users will need to provide proof of their age through bank information or government-issued identification documents before accessing certain adult content or services.
Microsoft stated that it is committed to providing a safe and inclusive online environment for all users and has been seeking innovative ways to protect young users. The implementation of age verification checks is part of Microsoft’s commitment to the Online Safety Bill, aiming to ensure that content on the Xbox platform is appropriate for all age groups.
To carry out age verification, Xbox users will be guided through a simplified verification process when they first attempt to access adult content. Users can choose to upload government-issued identification documents such as a driver’s license or passport, or use bank information to verify their age. Microsoft emphasized that all personal data will be strictly protected and comply with data protection regulations.
The implementation of the Online Safety Bill has had a significant impact on the Xbox platform, requiring Microsoft to update its terms of service and user agreements, as well as enhance technical measures to ensure compliance. Microsoft also stated that it will closely cooperate with the UK government to ensure that its platform meets all new legal requirements and will continuously evaluate and improve its age verification system to adapt to the changing technological and legal environment.
“There is no one-size-fits-all solution to player safety issues, so these methods may vary in different regions and scenarios,” said Kim Kunes, Vice President of Microsoft’s Gaming Trust and Safety. “We will work with local communities, publishing partners, and regulatory agencies to determine the right approach that respects player privacy without affecting the Xbox gaming experience. We will continue to communicate about the changes we are making in our practices and data collection to better protect players on our platform.”
Microsoft’s move has been widely welcomed by parents and regulatory agencies, who believe it will help reduce the risk of minors accessing inappropriate content. At the same time, it sets an example for other online platforms to follow the new regulations.
As the Online Safety Bill is further implemented, it is expected that more online service providers will adopt similar age verification measures to ensure the safety and compliance of their platforms. After all, the penalties for non-compliance include fines of up to £18 million (approximately 173 million yuan at current exchange rates) or 10% of global revenue, which could be a significant blow to companies like Microsoft.
Microsoft’s implementation of age verification checks demonstrates its commitment to user safety and compliance with local laws. With the in-depth implementation of the Online Safety Act, the Xbox platform will continue to provide users with a safe and healthy online entertainment environment.
