Irdeto and Selectron Systems implement new Threat Detection Solution for Rail Vehicle Systems

The Threat Detection Solution will be deployed into legacy and new train fleets globally to monitor trains to make train travel safer

AMSTERDAM – March 17, 2021 – Irdeto, the world leader in digital security, is pleased to announce today the selection of its Anomaly Detection System (ADS) by Selectron Systems AG, the system solution arm for safe and secure Train Control & Management Systems (TCMS) of the Knorr-Bremse Group, the global market leader for braking systems and a leading supplier of other rail and commercial vehicle systems. The newly developed ADS is now a key software component of Selectron Systems’ Threat Detection Solution (Selectron TDS) which will be available in 2021.

As the rail sector adopts digital solutions to ensure passenger safety and efficient operations, there comes a new set of cyber threats. New and smart transportation and mobility solutions are enhanced by automation, digitalization and connectivity. Alongside improvements in operations, the increased exposure for rail networks from the ever-growing risk of cyber threats must also be countered

Irdeto and Selectron are committed to addressing these new cybersecurity challenges. Irdeto’s ADS is a crucial element of Selectron TDS. The TDS is an essential measure for the detection and protection against cyber-attacks: detecting threats, reducing security vulnerabilities and achieving maximum protection; all making train travel safer. It combines traditional and deterministic whitelist filters deployed within the vehicle to a modern anomaly detection run in the cloud, allowing the train operator to detect anomalies to address them quickly.

Trust anchors will be embedded into Knorr-Bremse and Selectron devices at manufacturing as Selectron Systems integrates the Knorr-Bremse Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) with the TDS sensors. The PKI service, provided also by Irdeto, is a foundational element of Knorr-Bremse’s Security Architecture, which provides secure identities, secure boot and authentication for the TDS solution.

“Irdeto has shown a great level of flexibility and agility in adapting and optimizing the solution. Exactly what we are looking for in a partner. This partnership sets the standard for secure rail travel in a world where cybersecurity becomes increasingly vital to ensuring safe operations”, said Tomislav Radjenovic, Head Strategic Marketing at Selectron Systems.

“This is the next step in our partnership with Selectron and it strengthens the new standard in security across the rail sector,” added Niels Haverkorn, General Manager of Connected Transport at Irdeto. “The new TDS is an essential measure for the detection and protection against cyber-attacks and we are excited to be an integral part of the puzzle which makes the connected transport industry safer”.
