I Have a Question – Hong Kong Game Industry Association

At the GDC conference, representatives of the Hong Kong Game Industry Association(HKGIA) and 26 local game companies from Hong Kong participated in the promotion of Hong Kong games to present original Hong Kong games to the world. CGGE had the opportunity to interview Mr. Yang Shouneng, the leader of HKGIA, to talk about Hong Kong games with everyone.

CGGE: Mr. Yang, can you talk to everyone about the characteristics of Hong Kong games?

Mr. Yang: The game industry in Hong Kong has a history of more than ten or twenty years. Originally the game company made PC games, but quickly followed the trend, began to produce online games, and mainly to serve the local market. They use some of Hong Kong’s local authorized content, such as the martial arts content of Jin Yong and Gu Long’s novels to create games. There are also some games based on Hong Kong comics. The quality of online game production was very good.

With the advent of mobile games, namely iOS and Android platform games, many Hong Kong companies have transformed into mobile games. The products produced after the transformation are more diversified. Hong Kong is an international city that communicates in both Chinese and English, so Hong Kong can absorb the culture of different countries. The content that Hong Kong people like is also diversified. Some like European and American styles, some like Japanese style, and some like Chinese style. Therefore, there are also many choices when it comes to materials. Unlike the mainland, there may be fewer relative choices, and there will be less exposure to overseas.

CGGE: Why did you come to the Game Developers Conference this time?

Mr. Yang: This time our association participated in the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in Hong Kong (cause) because we have not promoted Hong Kong games at international exhibitions for a long time. Because online games were originally produced in local languages, the market was limited to local; with the internationalization of IOS and Android, many people began to make international games, and the types of games began to suit players in different places.

This time we selected 26 game companies, all of which have different representations and different styles of games. You will see different cultural characteristics, such as our authentic Hong Kong style, Japanese style, Chinese style and European and American style. The types of games are diverse, and each company has different types of games, such as guessing games, VR games, and games based on various engines.

We have seen some interesting games, such as “The Heroes of Working”. It combines local culture into games, combines work and heroes, and has a unique style with Hong Kong characteristics. I hope this type of game can open up a new game market.

You will see some physical games and try to transform mobile games. You can see that these visual drafts are very good, with European and American styles and Japanese styles. In Hong Kong, many people like Japanese games, so they will be deeply affected by the game production. This type of game is comparable to Japanese games in the quality of visual drafts and games.

We also have some simple and cute style designs, such as “BOKU BOKU”, which is simple but the design style is cutting-edge, international, and the design quality is very high. We also have some games that are based on internationally renowned buildings, landmarks or places of interest. The content of these games can be distributed worldwide.

The 26 games brought this time vary in style and variety. You can see that the style of Hong Kong games is very special, all original, including your own ideas, and will not be copied.

This time we came to GDC, and Hong Kong game companies also felt that they have benefited a lot. They have been exposed to industry professionals and players around the world, and have gained a lot of opinions, established business relationships with each other, and promoted and distributed Hong Kong games to the world. We also see the differences in other people’s games and draw on the concept of innovation, which can greatly benefit Hong Kong games. Our game industry will also be happy to see the success of this game show, and the participating members are also very satisfied. Thanks to the Hong Kong government for its support in promoting Hong Kong games.
