EU Allocates €6.1 Million to Empower Game Studios for Innovative Tools & New Business Models

The European Union has released a total of €6.1 million in targeted funding under the funding strand “Innovative Tools and Business Models”, delivering strong financial backing to Europe’s video game creative sector to boost technological R&D and sustainable monetization frameworks across the continent’s game development ecosystem.
Among the 11 approved projects under this funding round, seven belong to the video game industry, which splits the total game-focused funding into two major recipient nations: Germany secures €3.3 million for four local studio projects, while French game developers receive the remaining €2.8 million to advance their innovative initiatives.
Core Functions & Strategic Value of EU Game Industry Funding
This round of EU funding serves as a core policy instrument to strengthen Europe’s competitive edge in the global gaming market, with three core objectives:
- Accelerate technological innovation: Support studios to develop AI production tools, 3D creation pipelines, remote collaborative development systems and immersive media solutions, cutting independent developers’ R&D costs and lowering technical barriers for small and medium-sized studios. Many projects would otherwise be shelved without public financial support, according to industry research on European gaming subsidiesVideo Game….
- Revitalize sustainable business models: Fund trials of player-centric revenue frameworks, cross-platform commercialization, creator co-operation mechanisms and data-driven marketing systems, helping European studios reduce reliance on single monetization channels and build long-term profitability.
- Consolidate regional industrial clusters: Prioritize backing for Germany and France, Europe’s two core gaming hubs, to reinforce local talent chains, industrial supply chains and cross-border studio cooperation, preserving European cultural diversity amid global gaming competition.

For France, the €2.8 million funding complements its existing national game tax credit scheme. The capital will support French teams to build proprietary creative tools and export European interactive content globally, lifting the localization rate of domestic game production expenditure and expanding the international influence of French interactive cultural worksVideo Game….
Closing Statement

Stephan Steininger commented on the funding round: “Video games are a frontier digital creative industry integrating technology, art and commerce. This EU funding package not only delivers immediate financial support to German and French studios, but also lays a long-term foundation for Europe to build an independent, innovative and resilient gaming industrial chain, enabling European creators to compete fairly with global giants while retaining unique regional cultural characteristics.”
All funded projects will launch their R&D and commercialization phases in the coming months, with results set to be shared across the European creative industry network to drive cross-border knowledge exchange.
