Classic ‘GoldenEye 007’ game is coming to Nintendo Switch and Xbox

MGM and EON Productions are partnering to bring the classic video game GoldenEye 007 to the Nintendo Switch and Microsoft Xbox platforms. Originally released in 1997 on the Nintendo 64 system,

After years of rights issues, a remastered version of GoldenEye 007 has finally arrived on Xbox, along with a port of the original for Switch that adds online multiplayer.

“GoldenEye 007,” a classic first-person shooter made for Nintendo 64 in 1997, is being revived for Nintendo Switch and Xbox more than 25 years later. For fans who subscribe to additional content on both gaming systems, the game will be available on Friday.

The Game Pass version is playable on Xbox One and Xbox Series X and S. A subscription costs $10 a month, though people who own a digital copy of Rare Replay, the 30-game compilation of classics that came out in 2015, can also get access to GoldenEye for free. That doesn’t apply to physical copies of Rare Replay, and the game isn’t available to purchase separately.

“The game now offers modern control options (including support for dual analog sticks) and a consistent refresh rate, running at a native 16:9 resolution up to 4K Ultra HD (where supported),” Craig Duncan, head of Microsoft-owned developer Rare, said in a blog post marking the game’s release. “There’s also a full roster of Xbox achievements to strive for, some of which are sure to test the mettle of proficient 00 Agents.”

Online multiplayer modes are exclusive to the Nintendo Switch version of the game, as opposed to Microsoft’s “faithful recreation” that’s available for Xbox One and Xbox Series S / X consoles and included in the Xbox Game Pass subscription.

The classic campaign mode will also be available on Xbox, alongside cheat modes, support for dual analog sticks, and a native 16:9 aspect ratio up to 4K. If you already own a digital copy of Rare Replay on Xbox, then GoldenEye 007 is included and free of charge.
