BoKu BoKu Story–HK Pixticle
In the overseas game market, Hong Kong is a relatively special existence: its market size is small, and per capita payment is among the best in the global market; the culture is open and all-encompassing, and many fresh game ideas are constantly up coming. Today, let’s talk some of the views of Hong Kong gamers on Hong Kong game industry.
CGGE: Hello! Can you say something about your company and team?
Mr. Leung: Hello everyone, my name is Liang Kin Fung. I am the founder of the game company “PIXTICLE”. The name of the company means “to gather the small elements like rice to form into a huge cube”, and the English name is Pixel ( A combination of pixels and Particles.
At the beginning of the establishment, I was the only employee of the company; and did all the work. Although there was only one grain of power, I have the ambition to become a cube. As a game company, our product line is also very simple, focusing only on a game called “BOKU BOKU”.
I am Liang Kin Fung, this is a photo of the recent game show in Japan.
Although I am the founder of the company, the position is a “developer”, because the game needs to be developed.
CGGE: “BOKU BOKU” is fresh and lovely, and the characters and scenes are pretty. Can you tell us about the game? Why did you develop this game?
Mr. Leung: “BOKU BOKU” (BOKU) is a building block game. If you use the terminology of the game industry, it is a “sandbox” game. The world of the game consists of countless squares. You can build things on each square like building blocks, such as laying some floors on the ground, then laying a piece of wallpaper and roof on it, then building windows and doors, and sofas. Furniture, tables, beds, etc., can build a house. There are so many kinds of “building blocks” in the game, as long as the player can imagine, you can try to build it, so it is an inspirational game.
The most special place for BOKU is to interact with objects. You can control the characters to look for everything and find it? For example, you can sit on the piano and the screen will show the keys, so you can play a song by yourself. In addition, some toys can also be opened, switching to the sub-small games for everyone to play together. In addition, daily tools such as clocks, calendars, calculators, etc. can be opened and can be used practically. There are also a lot of things that can be played, toilets, beds, switches, etc., all of which can be interactive.
The game contains a variety of systems, the most worthwhile, and at the same time less well known, is the “multiplayer mode”, through multiplayer mode, you can enter the same world with other players, and carry out various interactions. You can send flowers to each other and send a kiss to the other party. For intimate players, you can also kiss each other. Of course, some players who jump in the skin can also pick up the laser sword and laser gun to come to a cute battle.
In summary, back to the beginning, this is a sandbox, there is no established gameplay and rules, BOKU only provides a venue and a large number of elements. How to play? It all depends on you, how you want to play and then play it.
Looking back at the original intention of the game, I started out in the summer of 2016. At that time, I just wanted to make it out in a summer time to see if my son likes to play. About a month later, I made the initial shape, I can control the characters to run and jump, and I can easily build some color blocks, but with such a simple function, it is enough to attract the son to build things on it, like the graffiti, using the color blocks. Build a robot and build a world in his heart. From this, I learned that every child, even everyone, actually has a world in mind, and BOKU exists in order to build a world of everyone.
I want to build a house and play with my family and my friends.
This piano can really bounce! Every little thing can be interactive.
Give him/her flowers and enjoy the moon in the sky.
In the early days of development, my son had been able to use it to build robots.
CGGE: What are the release platforms for this game? Which age group is it aimed at? How much time does the entire development time take?
Mr. Leung: BOKU has been released to the App Store and Google Play, and will be launched in Nintendo Switch in the future.
Regarding the age level of players facing BOKU, frankly speaking, we do not deliberately design for a certain age group. The content is suitable for all ages, healthy and fun, interesting. Because the construction of the scene requires some skills, it is more suitable for children over 9 years old. There is no upper limit for age, as long as you have a childlike heart, even if you are 80 years old, it is suitable for playing. Perhaps because the picture is fresh and cute, at present, it is more attractive to primary school students and girls, as well as parents and children.
BOKU was produced in the summer of 2016. Now, in the blink of an eye, it is the summer vacation of 2019. My son has grown up from 6 to 9 years old. BOKU can be said to witness the growth of the father and son, no matter his study or my career. So, BOKU is more than just a game company’s product for me, it is already part of my family.
At every game show, BOKU is the most attractive to children.
The girl also hit the cute image of it.
I will even take my son to participate in the game show in the field.
CGGE: Are you currently developing some new games? What are your goals for the future?
Feng: In the short future, I am not planning to develop any new games. I intend to continue to focus on the development of BOKU for the rest of my life. Based on its potential, even if I spend all my life, I can only develop a little bit of fur content, so if possible, it will be developed from generation to generation, in order to dig out its true value.
In my opinion, different games are not going to be better than focusing on one, whether it is from the aspects of economic efficiency, brand building, or technology accumulation. Compared with these, it is more important on the orientation. We need to focus on a certain field unswervingly; thus we can gain players trust. My son is 9 years old, and I am not young (laughing). In my opinion, the most important thing for people is integrity. So in the future, there is only one goal, BOKU.
It is quite difficult to make a game well, BOKU is very suitable for me to continue development.
CGGE: For the huge domestic game market, will it affect the game industry in Hong Kong? Can you share your personal views on the current game industry in Hong Kong and its prospects? How do you see the cooperation between Hong Kong games and mainland game companies?
Mr. Leung: Well~ In the game industry, I am just a newcomer to the new game. At this stage, I just want to focus on the game. I cannot tell anything deeper. However, with the trend of integration of the earth, the game market is becoming more and more integrated. Any game can be downloaded anywhere through the network. Therefore, no matter where you play games, it is inevitable to be with the whole world. Game competition, in such a crowded environment, may need to achieve a certain point of nowhere, in order to grasp a little bit of living space. To this end, every game player should do his best.
Finally, I sincerely thank CGGE for the interview and you are reading, goodbye~
