Vietnam’s Mobile Games Rank 2nd Globally in 2025 Downloads, Export-Oriented Industry Rises Strongly

In April 2026, the 2025 Vietnam Mobile Game Industry Report, jointly released by GameGeek, the Broadcasting and Electronic Information Authority of Vietnam’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and Sensor Tower, revealed impressive figures for the country’s mobile game sector. Vietnam recorded 4.9 billion global downloads in 2025, firmly securing the world’s second position (trailing only China). The report highlights the industry’s strong export orientation and growing global competitiveness.

Global Downloads Rank High, Industry Ecosystem Expands

In 2025, Vietnam’s mobile games were downloaded approximately 9,300 times per minute, accumulating 4.9 billion downloads over the year. Meanwhile, 27,388 new games were released, up 13% year-on-year, ranking 33rd globally in production volume. With 210 active game studios, Vietnam’s industrial ecosystem continues to expand steadily.

Monetization Accelerates, Revenue Jumps Significantly

The report notes that Vietnamese mobile game IAP revenue surged 83% year-on-year, reflecting increasingly mature monetization models. Some 73% of studios now adopt pure IAP or hybrid (ads + IAP) strategies, significantly boosting user payer value. Moreover, Vietnam ranks 6th globally in publisher growth rate, accounting for 2.3% of the world’s total publishers – a counter-trend expansion against the backdrop of a global industry slowdown.

Heavy Reliance on Overseas Markets, Focus on Developing Economies

Vietnam’s mobile game industry is distinctly export-oriented. Domestic market contributes only 5.5% of total downloads, while over 94% come from overseas – more than 90% of which are concentrated in developing countries. India (13.93%), Brazil (7.32%), and Indonesia (6.67%) are the top three overseas markets. In terms of genres, hybrid casual, puzzle, simulation, and arcade games are the most popular, with the first three categories accounting for 66% of total downloads – the dominant product types for Vietnam’s出海 (going global) strategy.

On the platform side, Android holds an 84% download share, aligning with device preferences in developing countries. From a studio structure perspective, 38% of studios have been operating for 2–5 years, and 36% for 5–10 years, indicating a rapidly growing and iterating industry with abundant dynamism.

Core Strengths: Demographic Dividend, Cost Efficiency, and Policy Support

Vietnam has a population of nearly 100 million, of which 70% are under 35. Generation Z forms the core player base, with average daily gaming time ranging from 2.5 to 3.9 hours, providing a large and low-cost domestic user pool. At the same time, Vietnam’s game development and outsourcing talent are numerous and costeffective, and Vietnamese studios are flexible with low trialanderror costs – well suited to the fast iteration cycles of casual games. International platforms such as Google, Meta, and Microsoft continue to provide technical and traffic support for Vietnamese developers, making Vietnam a key growth engine for mobile app revenue in the AsiaPacific region – with app revenue growing 65% in 2025, the fastest in the region.

Challenges: Original IP, Monetization Depth, and Talent Competition

Despite impressive numbers, Vietnam’s mobile game industry faces several challenges. First, the capacity for original IP and mid toheavy game development remains weak. Most products are hypercasual and lightweight games; there is a lack of AA/AAA or midcore to heavy MMO/competitive titles. Homogeneity is common. Second, monetization depth is limited – ARPU stands at about US$94, far below China’s severalhundreddollar level, and total revenue is only about 1/250 of China’s.

Furthermore, as international companies like Tencent and Huawei increase their presence in Vietnam, local senior R&D talent continues to be poached. Core technologies – game engines, art, and game design – still rely heavily on outsourcing or foreign capital. The domestic market is small (only 5.5% of downloads), and coupled with stricter licensing approval (3–6 months for G1 category) and rising data compliance costs, small and mediumsized teams face growing regulatory pressure. On the international competition front, Chinese games already hold 81% of Vietnam’s local market. In Vietnam’s core export markets such as Southeast Asia and Latin America, Vietnamese developers face fierce competition from Chinese and Turkish studios, with rising user acquisition costs and platform commission fees squeezing profit margins.

Outlook: Moving Toward QualityDriven Development and a Global Production & Export Hub

The report points out that Vietnam’s mobile game industry is entering a critical transition from “quantitydriven” to “qualitydriven” growth. Tightening global platform policies are accelerating this shift. Leveraging its stable, mature production capacity, efficient distribution capabilities, and increasingly optimized monetization models, Vietnam is accelerating its emergence as a core global hub for mobile game production and export.

A GameGeek analyst commented: “Vietnam’s game industry excels in young demographics, global traffic, lowcost production capacity, and export efficiency. In the short term, it may not fully shed its label as a ‘global casual game foundry’. However, by strengthening original R&D, deepening monetization, and retaining highend talent, Vietnam has a real opportunity to transition from foundry to original creation in the years ahead.”

Vietnam’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and related industry bodies have indicated they will continue to promote policy support and international collaboration, helping local game studios enhance their core competitiveness and capture highervalue positions in the global gaming value chain.
