Microsoft Xbox Appoints New CEO: Asha Sharma Takes the Helm, Vows “No Tolerance for Bad AI”
Microsoft’s gaming business has recently undergone a major leadership shakeup. Phil Spencer, the legendary leader of Xbox, has officially announced his retirement, concluding a remarkable 38-year career at Microsoft, including 12 years at the helm of its gaming division. Succeeding Spencer as CEO of Microsoft Gaming is Asha Sharma, who previously served as President of Product for Microsoft’s CoreAI division and has been deeply involved in building the company’s AI platform since returning to Microsoft in 2024.
Concurrently, Sarah Bond, former President of Xbox, has decided to leave Microsoft to embark on a new chapter. Matt Booty has been promoted to Executive Vice President and Chief Content Officer, reporting to Sharma, and will continue to lead the nearly 40 game studios under the Microsoft Gaming umbrella, encompassing renowned brands such as Xbox, Bethesda, Activision Blizzard, and King.
Widespread Rumors of “Largest Layoff in History,” Hardware Plans Potentially Severely Impacted
Accompanying the executive changes is widespread industry concern and speculation about Xbox’s future direction. Notable industry leaker SneakerSO posted on the NeoGAF forum suggesting that these personnel adjustments could lead to the Xbox division facing one of the largest rounds of layoffs in its history under the new leadership, under the guise of “business restructuring.” According to the leak, this move has dealt a “fatal blow” to Xbox’s hardware planning, arguing that for the Xbox division, there is no worse scenario than being placed under the control of a former product president from Microsoft’s core AI division.
The source further indicated that Sarah Bond’s departure is a significant signal of the profound changes occurring behind the scenes. Bond was widely regarded as a close confidante and key lieutenant of Phil Spencer. Her exit suggests that Xbox is undergoing a fundamental restructuring of power.
“No Tolerance for Bad AI”: Sharma Clarifies AI Stance, Emphasizes Human-Centric Creation
Addressing external concerns stemming from her AI background, Sharma clearly articulated her views on AI in an exclusive interview with Variety magazine. She acknowledged that the gaming industry is currently in a turbulent period of transformation but remains optimistic and open-minded about the future.
Sharma stated that she has “no tolerance for bad AI.” She emphasized: “AI has long been part of gaming and will continue to be. Gaming needs new growth engines, but great stories are created by humans. Games are and always will be art, crafted by humans, and created with the most innovative technology provided by us.”
In an internal memo to her team, Sharma outlined three core commitments: great games, the return of Xbox, and the future of play. She pledged to empower studios, invest in iconic franchises, back bold new ideas, and enter new categories and markets grounded in what players care about most.

Spencer: Bidding Farewell to a Legend, Looking to the Future
In his farewell message, Spencer expressed gratitude to his teams and players: “Xbox has always been more than a business. It’s a vibrant community of players, creators, and teams who care deeply about what we build and how we build it. I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve built together over the last 25 years, and I have complete confidence in all of you and in the opportunities ahead.”
Microsoft Gaming currently reaches over 500 million monthly active users across PC, mobile, and cloud, with its business scale having nearly tripled since Spencer took the helm. As new leadership takes charge, the gaming giant stands at a critical crossroads. Whether Sharma can successfully balance AI technology with human-centric creation will likely determine the trajectory of the Xbox era to come.
