Ubisoft Acquires Amazon Games Montreal Studio, Accelerating Strategic Expansion

Leading global interactive entertainment company Ubisoft recently announced that it has completed the acquisition of Amazon Games Montreal. Although the specific terms of the deal were not disclosed, the move marks a significant step for Ubisoft in strengthening its research and development capabilities and expanding its product portfolio.

Notably, the acquisition not only brings Ubisoft high-quality game development resources but also sees the return of several industry veterans. Among them, the return of Xavier Marquis, former Creative Director of Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege, and Alex Parizeau, former Head of Ubisoft Toronto, is particularly noteworthy. Their addition is expected to inject new vitality into the creative development of Ubisoft’s key projects.

As part of the transaction, Ubisoft also secured the publishing rights for the upcoming free-to-play MOBA title March of Giants, which was under development at Amazon Games Montreal. While Ubisoft will take the lead in publishing the game going forward, Amazon has pledged to continue providing marketing support through its streaming platform Twitch, creating a unique cross-platform collaborative model.

This acquisition comes amidst a large-scale business restructuring at Amazon. At the end of October this year, Amazon announced plans to cut approximately 14,000 employees across the company, with its gaming division also affected. According to Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier, Amazon will adjust its gaming strategy moving forward, reducing investment in high-budget game projects and instead focusing on areas with stronger competitive advantages, such as the Luna cloud gaming service.

Analysts believe that Ubisoft’s acquisition not only solidifies its position in Canada as a key development hub but also reflects its strategic intent to continuously enhance its own development and publishing capabilities in an increasingly competitive gaming market by integrating mature teams and projects. With the addition of projects like March of Giants, Ubisoft is expected to further diversify its game portfolio, particularly strengthening its presence in the free-to-play and live-service game segments.
