2026 Game Developers Choice Awards Honors Don Daglow with Lifetime Achievement Award, Posthumously Presents Rebecca Ann Heineman with Ambassador Award

Industry pioneers recognized for half a century of innovation and advocacy, leaving an indelible legacy for game developers worldwide
Organizers of the 26th annual Game Developers Choice Awards (GDCA) announced the recipients of two of the ceremony’s most prestigious awards. As the premier peer-recognized accolade for the global video game industry, the GDCA will take place during the 2026 GDC Festival of Gaming on March 12. At that time, the international game development community will honor Don Daglow, an Emmy® Award-winning game designer, programmer, and producer of over 100 games throughout his 55-year career, with the Lifetime Achievement Award. This year’s Ambassador Award, given to key individuals who help video games advance to a better place through advocacy and action, will be posthumously presented to influential programmer and Interplay Productions co-founder Rebecca Ann Heineman.
The ceremony will be held on Thursday, March 12, from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM. The GDC Festival of Gaming, a global gathering for the full game-making ecosystem, will take place at San Francisco’s Moscone Center from March 9 – 13, 2026.
Lifetime Achievement Award: Don Daglow, A Pioneer Who Defined the Boundaries of Games
Don Daglow is an award-winning, Emmy®-winning game designer with a 55-year career encompassing over 100 games. His passion for games was born while studying playwriting at Pomona College, where he began programming text-based games on mainframe computers. Starting his industry journey in 1980 as one of the original five Intellivision game programmers (and rivals to Atari) at Mattel, Daglow has worked on and helped drive the evolution of every generation of video game consoles.
His pioneering titles represent milestones in gaming history:
1971: First interactive baseball game, BASBAL
1972: First chatbot to surpass ELIZA, Ecala
1976: First RPG on a non-classroom computer, Dungeon
1981: First console god game, city builder, and RTS, Utopia
1983: First video game to use multiple camera angles, World Series Major League Baseball
1991-1997: First MMORPG to use graphics instead of text, Neverwinter Nights (on AOL, Emmy Award winner)
Additionally, he served as Executive Producer on numerous hit franchises, including Carmen Sandiego, EA Sports, The Lord of the Rings, Prince of Persia, Sim City (distribution), and Star Wars, demonstrating his profound influence across the entire industry.
Ambassador Award: Rebecca Ann Heineman (1963–2025), A Legendary Trailblazer and Advocate
Rebecca Ann Heineman was a true pioneer in the game industry, celebrated both as one of the first professional video game players and as a highly accomplished, groundbreaking developer. In 1980, she made history by winning the first National Space Invaders Championship, becoming the inaugural U.S. video game tournament champion. This victory launched a remarkable 45-year career during which she contributed to over 250 games, including classics like The Bard’s Tale III, Dragon Wars, Wolfenstein 3D, and Doom (3DO).
As a foundational figure, she co-founded Interplay Productions, helping create beloved franchises like The Bard’s Tale. She later founded Contraband Entertainment, contributing to critically acclaimed titles such as Myth III, Baldur’s Gate II, and Icewind Dale. She also led programming projects for major companies like Electronic Arts, Amazon, and Sony. A passionate advocate for diversity and inclusion and a prominent transgender advocate, Rebecca’s contributions and unwavering commitment to representation cemented her legacy as a visionary in gaming history.
Industry Tribute: Creativity and Conviction Move the Medium Forward
“Honoring the creators who shaped this industry is one of the great privileges of hosting the Game Developers Choice Awards,” said Nina Brown, President of GDC. “Don Daglow and Rebecca Heineman helped define what games could become, and their innovations continue to influence how developers create today. As the GDC Festival of Gaming transforms alongside a rapidly changing industry, their legacy reminds us that creativity, conviction, and bold experimentation are what move this medium forward.”
Recipients of the Lifetime Achievement and Ambassador Awards were chosen by this year’s Game Developers Choice Editorial Committee, following suggestions from the International Choice Awards Network (ICAN).
