Xbox has cancelled the “Perfect Dark” project and shut down The Initiative studio, initiating layoffs in the game department.

Microsoft Xbox announced a new round of organizational adjustments on July 5th, cancelling the highly anticipated reboot project of “Perfect Dark” and closing the studio responsible for it, The Initiative. This adjustment is part of a 4% overall staff reduction plan for the company’s gaming division, which will affect multiple teams within Xbox.
The Initiative, established in 2018 as a first-party studio under Xbox dedicated to creating AAA titles, announced in 2020 that it would be rebooting the classic IP “Perfect Dark” in collaboration with Crystal Dynamics. However, the project faced numerous challenges during development, including the departure of key team members and slow progress, ultimately leading to Xbox’s decision to terminate the project.
Xbox’s strategic adjustment aims to optimize resources and focus on core projects. Matt Booty, head of Xbox Game Studios, stated in an internal email that the adjustment is intended to “ensure resources are concentrated on the most strategically significant projects.” In recent years, Xbox has been continuously optimizing its first-party studio layout and has previously consolidated some teams. The closure of The Initiative marks Xbox’s further streamlining of its development structure to concentrate resources on supporting existing key IPs.
Despite the cancellation of “Perfect Dark,” Xbox still has several major titles in development, including “Gears of War 6” (The Coalition), “Indiana Jones” (MachineGames), “Hellblade 2” (Ninja Theory), and “Everwild” (Rare).
The cancellation of “Perfect Dark” has sparked widespread discussions in the player community. Many fans expressed regret over the project’s termination and raised questions about the future strategy of Xbox’s first-party games. Industry analysts pointed out that in the increasingly competitive gaming market, Xbox needs a clearer exclusive content strategy to compete with Sony and Nintendo.
Microsoft stated that affected employees will receive severance packages and re-employment support. The company expects to release more details on business adjustments in the coming weeks.
