Tomb Raider Studio Announces Another Round of Layoffs! Third Workforce Reduction in a Year Sparks Industry Concerns

(News Dispatch) Prominent game developer Crystal Dynamics confirmed its third round of layoffs for 2023 via an official statement on LinkedIn. This restructuring will affect fewer than 30 employees across multiple development departments and related projects. This marks the third workforce adjustment for the studio behind the Tomb Raider series, following previous rounds in March and August this year.
Official Statement: Optimizing Structure to Safeguard Core IP
The studio emphasized in its statement that “these difficult decisions were made to ensure the development progress of the new Tomb Raider title and preparations for future projects.” The statement also expressed gratitude to departing employees and committed to providing career transition support. In a special address to the player community, the letter attributed the layoffs to “adapting to the continuously evolving industry landscape.” (Link to official statement: https://www.linkedin.com/company/crystal-dynamics/)
Context: Project Changes and Strategic Reshuffling
The August layoffs coincided with Microsoft’s cancellation of the Perfect Dark remake collaboration project.
The March layoffs affecting 17 employees were seen as part of the ongoing strategic reorganization under parent company Embracer Group.
The studio is currently focusing resources on developing what the parent company calls a “blockbuster new title” for the Tomb Raider series.
Industry Perspective
Three consecutive layoff rounds reflect the profound impact of Embracer Group’s global restructuring plan initiated in 2022. According to Bloomberg reports, the group has shuttered multiple studios and canceled over 29 development projects in recent years. Analysts note that traditional AAA studios are facing dual pressures of skyrocketing development costs and industry transformation.
As of press time, Crystal Dynamics has not disclosed specific release timelines for the new Tomb Raider game. Whether this organizational restructuring will affect development progress will be subject to ongoing monitoring.
