Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse’s 3-Year Delay Finally Explained, Creatives Say “Taking It Apart to Put It Back Together Was the Real Challenge”

The long-awaited animated film Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse has been on the minds of countless fans since its delay was announced in 2023. Recently, the film’s writers and producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller revealed for the first time the real story behind the three-year postponement of the trilogy’s finale, sharing their struggles and breakthroughs during the creative process.
The Difficult Journey from “Splitting in Two” to “Reassembly”
Originally, Sony planned to release the final chapter, Beyond the Spider-Verse, less than a year after Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse hit theaters in 2023, targeting a March 2024 release. However, the film has undergone multiple schedule changes and is now set for a June 18, 2027 release. While the 2023 Hollywood strikes impacted production, Miller admitted that the real challenge stemmed from structural issues within the story itself.
“It was one movie at one point, but there was too much movie there, so it was separated into two,” Miller explained to Gizmodo. “But then once you looked at that second half of a movie, you’re like, ‘Well, that’s not just a story arc that has a beginning, middle, and end.'”
This realization became a turning point in the creative process. Although the ending was already planned out, figuring out how to flesh out the middle portion to make the story truly work became the biggest challenge for the creative team.
Thematic Breakthrough: When Family is Torn Apart by Destiny, How Do You Mend It?
In their exploration, Lord and Miller found the key to unlocking the story. Lord shared, “We know where it’s headed, but we need to understand better what’s happening in the middle. And we came upon a really wonderful notion, which is when your family is broken apart by your calling, your talents, how do you put them back together? How do you have it all?”
The establishment of this core theme provided a decisive breakthrough for the scriptwriting. It not only deepened the personal growth arc of Miles Morales but also endowed this superhero story with a stronger emotional core.
Self-Imposed Pressure: “We Won’t Settle for Anything Less Than Surpassing Ourselves”
The first two Spider-Verse animated films – Into the Spider-Verse and Across the Spider-Verse – achieved immense critical success (both hold over 95% on Rotten Tomatoes) and box office triumphs (grossing over $1 billion combined worldwide). Faced with such high expectations, Lord and Miller admitted that the greatest pressure doesn’t come from the outside, but from within.
“We put the most pressure on ourselves. There’s no one that puts more pressure on us than ourselves,” Miller emphasized. “We’re wanting to outdo ourselves each time and see things that you haven’t seen before and make it feel like something you’ve never experienced before. And so, trying to get something that is as worthy as the previous two has been the driver.”
This pursuit of perfection necessitates a lot of trial and error. Lord added, “The main trick is to play free, and to have the whole team understand that their job is to try stuff, to make mistakes, to see where this could go. And I can report that they’re going hard. It’s so great.”
Miller pinpointed the core reason for the delay: “Having to take it apart to put it back together again was really, really [the] real thing that made it take longer.”

A Finale Worth the Wait
Although the long wait has been tough for fans, Lord and Miller firmly believe the final product will prove it was all worthwhile. Beyond the Spider-Verse will pick up directly after the cliffhanger ending of Across the Spider-Verse, continuing Miles’ journey. Shameik Moore will return to voice Miles, alongside returning cast members including Hailee Steinfeld and Oscar Isaac. Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson are back as co-directors.
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse swings into theaters on June 18, 2027. Before then, Spider-Man fans can look forward to the live-action film Spider-Man: Brand New Day starring Tom Holland (releasing July 30) and the live-action series Spider-Noir led by Nicolas Cage (premiering May 27) later this year.
