Sony’s Soneium teams with Animoca Brands blockchain for anime digital IDs

Sony’s Soneium blockchain and Animoca Brands collaborate to integrate Moca Network’s identity infrastructure, launching Anime ID to enhance anime experiences in web3.

Animoca Brands has teamed up with Sony’s Ethereum layer 2-based Soneium blockchain to build a decentralised digital identity layer for Web3 integrating anime artworks.

Animoca Brands , a leading Web3 company focused on facilitating and promoting  digital property rights for consumers through tokenisation and blockchain technology, late last week announced a significant strategic partnership with a blockchain entity developed by one the world’s biggest tech companies.

The partnership is with Soneium, a layer 2 open blockchain (a tech stack built on top of Ethereum) developed by Sony and powered by Optimism’s Superchain technology.

The integration will begin with the introduction of Anime ID, a decentralized identifier (DID) and reputation layer developed by San FranTokyo, a key contributor to the Anime Foundation. This system will allow users to verify their credentials and maintain a consistent identity across various decentralized applications (dApps) on Soneium. By incorporating Moca Network’s Account, Identity, and Reputation SDK (AIR SDK), the blockchain will enable users to establish and control embedded accounts, ensuring a unified and secure digital presence.

Soneium is being developed by Sony Block Solutions Labs (SBSL), a joint initiative established by Sony Group Corporation and Startale Group, focused on transcending boundaries with the open internet. Sony Group has built a diverse range of businesses with the purpose of ‘filling the world with emotion through the power of creativity and technology’. The desire to share emotion and excitement and to stay connected with someone no matter where you are is a fundamental human aspiration.

Jun Watanabe, chairman of Sony Block Solutions Labs, stated that the collaboration with Animoca Brands will establish a foundational identity and reputation layer on Soneium.  “Our partnership with Animoca Brands enables us to establish an identity and reputation layer on Soneium. As one of the largest entertainment industries, anime presents immense potential. By integrating Moca Network’s AIR SDK and Anime ID into Soneium and Animoca Brands launching anime-inspired cultural campaigns, we aim to onboard global anime fans to the blockchain, enabling them to collaborate, create, and infuse the world with emotion.”

Yat Siu, executive chairman of Animoca Brands, emphasized that the partnership represents a step forward in the evolution of web3. He highlighted that integrating Moca Network’s identity infrastructure into Soneium would not only enhance entertainment experiences but also create a more interconnected and secure digital ecosystem.  He emphasized that:  “Our partnership with Soneium marks a significant step towards an interconnected Web3 future. By integrating Moca Network’s identity infrastructure, we’re not just enhancing entertainment experiences; we’re creating a seamless digital ecosystem. The partnership will empower Soneium users with unified digital identities, bridging anime, gaming, and blockchain technologies.”

David Taing, head of San FranTokyo, expressed enthusiasm about Anime ID’s integration with Soneium, noting that it represents a significant milestone in expanding anime-related blockchain initiatives. He emphasized that the collaboration with Moca Network and Soneium will enable fans and industry partners to connect and participate in new digital experiences inspired by anime culture.“We’re excited to launch Anime ID on Soneium as one of Anime ID’s first major ecosystem partners. Together with Moca Network and Soneium, San FranTokyo will work with our global and industry partners to connect, onboard, and empower anime fans to new anime inspired experiences across ecosystems.”
