“Sonic the Hedgehog 4” Begins Filming! Director’s On-Set Photo Teases Amy Rose’s Iconic Hammer

Highly anticipated news for “Sonic the Hedgehog 4” – series director Jeff Fowler has announced via social media that filming has officially begun, sharing the first behind-the-scenes on-set photo. In the image, he is holding Amy Rose’s signature “Piko Piko Hammer,” sparking immediate excitement among fans.
“Ready 4 Action”: Amy Rose Makes a Grand Entrance
On Instagram and X, Fowler shared a photo from a wooded, green-screen-surrounded set. He is holding a clapperboard in one hand and the physically constructed iconic hammer aloft in the other. He captioned the post: “Ready 4 Action 🎬 #SonicMovie4 now filming. In Theaters Worldwide March 2027.” The official account playfully responded, “it’s hammer time.”
This physical hammer is particularly noteworthy. Just as practical props were created for Tails in the second film, the production team has crafted a usable prop hammer for Amy, potentially hinting at live-action characters wielding it in action scenes.

Kristen Bell Provides Voice, Pink Hedgehog Finally Hits the Big Screen
Amy Rose’s debut has been subtly set up. In the post-credits scene of “Sonic the Hedgehog 3,” when Sonic is surrounded and overwhelmed by an army of Metal Sonics, it is this pink hedgehog wielding her hammer who appears to save him. Although she had no lines, it laid the groundwork for the fourth film. Just over a week ago, it was officially announced that Golden Globe nominee Kristen Bell, known for voicing Anna in “Frozen,” will voice Amy.
Amy is a classic character from the Sonic game series – an energetic, cheerful, but sometimes impulsive pink hedgehog. She considers herself Sonic’s “girlfriend” and consistently tries to win his heart in their adventures. Her ever-present “Piko Piko Hammer” is both her weapon and her signature.
Writers Previously Stated: “Didn’t Want to Crowd Shadow’s Story”
The timing of Amy’s introduction was carefully considered by the writing team. Back in 2024, “Sonic 3” writer Pat Casey revealed: “We did talk long and hard about including [Amy] in movie three, actually, before ultimately, we all sort of decided that there just wasn’t quite enough room to do her justice and Shadow justice. We didn’t wanna crowd the picture.” Writer Josh Miller added, “You don’t want her to be there as a fourth wall running around with the trio. We just want to see her be cool. She’s kind of the big female character of the franchise.” They indicated at the time that they had a “great plan” for her successful introduction as a film character.
Star-Studded Voice Cast and the Mystery of Returning Actors
The Sonic film series is known for its top-tier voice talent. Previously, Idris Elba voiced Knuckles, Keanu Reeves voiced Shadow, and Colleen O’Shaughnessey continued as Tails, being the only actor to reprise her role from the games.
Among the live-action cast, Ben Schwartz returns as the voice of Sonic, with James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, and Lee Majdoub expected to return. The biggest question mark is whether Jim Carrey will reprise his role as the villainous Dr. Robotnik (Eggman). His character seemingly died at the end of the third film, and the actor has previously hinted at possible retirement. However, Carrey has expressed openness to returning for “Sonic 4,” citing a need for an interesting premise and script. Given that Metal Sonic is a product of Robotnik’s work, the writing team may find a clever way to bring him back.
Continuation of a Phenomenal Video Game Adaptation Series
The Sonic film series is one of the most unexpected success stories in video game adaptations. After the first film faced mockery for its original character design, the team revamped the model and doubled down on action, comedy, and heart, creating one of the most successful game-based film franchises ever. Following the introduction of Keanu Reeves as Shadow, the third film grossed nearly $500 million worldwide.
Development for a fourth film was discussed even before the third’s release and was confirmed the day after its theatrical debut, with a 2027 release date. Now, with the director’s announcement, this highly anticipated new chapter is officially underway. Based on the three-to-four-month live-action filming schedules of previous installments, principal photography for “Sonic the Hedgehog 4” is expected to wrap around early August of this year.
The film is slated for a worldwide release on March 19, 2027, with more casting announcements expected in the coming weeks.
