This November, the Berlin-based Pictoplasma Conference returns to New York to present today’s most trailblazing and trendsetting character design — and plumb the depths of the creators’ thinking and working methodologies. Featuring a stellar lineup of artist talks, performances, and animated short film screenings, the conference invites creatives and producers to network, exchange strategies for tomorrow’s figurative aesthetics, and build new alliances.

The featured speakers excel in the genres of animation, illustration, comics, toy and digital design. And they all utilize a common visual language, reducing figurative design in order to maximize empathy and response.

Speakers include Orion Tait, creative director, co-founder and partner at Buck, the design-driven animation production company with studios in New York, Los Angeles and Sydney; Félicie Haymoz, character designer of Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox and Isle of Dogs; Paul Budnitz, co-founder of Kidrobot, Ello, Budnitz Bicycles and recently Superplastic, the world’s leading creator of art toys and accessories; award-winning webcomics author Alex Norris, famed for his three-panel “oh no” series “Webcomic Name;” Miranda Tacchia, working in the Los Angeles animation industry, renowned for her powerful, humorous and very sexy drawings; and Jerone Braxton, the emerging star of animation, Sundance 2018 winner in the animated shorts section. Additional speakers include Hungarian independent animation filmmaker Réka Bucsi, stop-motion animator Peter Sluszka, and U.K. filmmaker and animator Sophie Koko Gate.

Pictoplasma NYC is taking place as part of New York Illustration Week and is organized in partnership with The School of Art, Media and Technology and the BFA Illustration program at Parsons School of Design.
