Phenomenon Animated Film “K-POP: Demon Hunters” Wins Best Animated Feature at the 98th Oscars, Writing a New Chapter in History

At the just-concluded 98th Academy Awards ceremony, the original K-POP themed animated film “K-POP: Demon Hunters,” produced by US streaming platform Netflix, stood out and won the prestigious Best Animated Feature award. This cultural phenomenon-level work, which has swept the globe since its release last summer, has once again confirmed its unparalleled charm and influence on the highest stage of cinematic art.
The awards ceremony was held on the evening of March 15th local time at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. “K-POP: Demon Hunters” triumphed over strong competitors such as “Zootopia 2” and “Elio” to successfully take home the Oscar. Co-director Maggie Kang was visibly emotional when accepting the award on stage. After thanking the Academy and fans worldwide, she said with deep emotion: “For those of you who look like me, I’m so sorry that it took us so long to see ourselves in a movie like this. But it is here today. This means that the next generation won’t have to carry that longing. This is for Korea and for Koreans everywhere.”
This award is not only a victory for “K-POP: Demon Hunters” but also makes history. Director Maggie Kang and producer Michelle L.M. Wong became the first female Asian filmmakers to win the Oscar for Best Animated Feature in the category’s history.
More Than Just an Award: A True Cultural Phenomenon
The success of “K-POP: Demon Hunters” extends far beyond Oscar night. Previously, it swept numerous other top industry honors, including the Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature, the Critics’ Choice Award, the Producers Guild of America Award, and a record-breaking 10 Annie Awards.
Since its release on Netflix in June last year, the film quickly ignited a global viewing craze. It became the most popular movie in Netflix’s history with over 236 million views and ranked in the top ten on Netflix charts in 93 countries. This fervor also extended to the music scene. The film’s soundtrack made history as the first album to have four simultaneous songs in the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100 and achieved platinum certification.
Its influence has long transcended the screen, permeating everyday life. In San Francisco, USA, elementary school students collect stickers of the film’s characters as a prized possession. Birthday parties themed around the movie have become a new trend, where children immerse themselves in the film’s magic and sing along joyfully. As one eight-year-old fan, Oona, put it: “I like the characters, and all the dance moves and songs!”
A Dual Breakthrough in Technological Innovation and Artistic Expression
This film, produced by Sony Pictures Animation, also represents a milestone in technology. To realize the complex scenes combining fast-paced action, dense crowds, and concert-level lighting effects, the Sony Pictures Imageworks team innovatively used Unreal Engine for previsualization at the early layout stage.
This technology allowed the team to intuitively assess how action, lighting, materials, and camera language would work together from the outset. For instance, the highly challenging fight scene set in a steamy bathhouse was initially blocked out by a visualization artist using Unreal Engine in about a week. This enabled the team to instantly see how the sheen of wet tiles, the density of the steam, and the fast-paced camerawork could jointly create a tense and dramatic atmosphere. A team member involved stated: “To see all of it just come together with something approximating very close to the final render at the layout stage—and just set it up quick like that—was mind-blowing.”
A New Chapter in the Korean Wave: A Love Letter to K-pop and a Source of National Pride for Korea
The success of “K-POP: Demon Hunters” arrives at a time when global enthusiasm for Korean pop culture is expanding. The film tells the story of a popular girl group using their golden voices to protect the human world from evil spirits. Its core is a universal theme of self-acceptance, delivered in the form of a heartfelt love letter to K-pop culture.
The film includes humorous depictions of K-pop fan culture, such as a furtive conversation between idols immediately sparking dating rumors, or the debut of a new band quickly drawing fans away—scenes considered by fans and scholars alike to be witty inside jokes. Simultaneously, the soundtrack, crafted by major K-pop musicians and top Hollywood creators, cleverly merges K-pop’s unique style with globally familiar pop elements, serving the narrative progression. The lyrics’ profound exploration of identity and self-discovery have resonated widely.
Within South Korea, the film has ignited a powerful sense of national pride. From elementary school students near Seoul eagerly collecting photo cards of the characters, to ordinary viewers deeply moved by the film’s emotions, “K-POP: Demon Hunters” stands as a hallmark of the new Korean Wave. As Grace Kao, Professor of Sociology and K-pop researcher at Yale University, stated: “I think this film marks a turning point in terms of how cool Korea is on the global stage. It’s not just K-pop, but sort of K-everything.”
Given the film’s immense success, Netflix has announced a sequel, aiming for a 2029 release. Directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans will return to direct and write the film, as part of a new, exclusive multi-year writing and directing deal with Netflix across animation.
“K-POP: Demon Hunters” Oscar journey not only adds the most brilliant touch to its own glorious history but also signals that Asian pop culture, represented by K-pop, is influencing the global entertainment landscape with unprecedented depth and breadth.
