Netflix has picked up a 10-episode live-action remake of Cowboy Bebop, Shinichiro Watanabe’s famous 1998 film noir Western-styled animated TV series many regard as one of the greatest anime titles of all-time. The new series, based on the original Sunrise Inc., show, is a co-production between Netflix and Tomorrow Studios, Marty Adelstein’s joint venture with ITV Studios. Netflix will handle physical production.

The series, written and executive produced by Christopher Yost (Thor: The Dark World, Thor: Ragnarok), is the jazz-inspired, genre-bending story of Spike Spiegel, Jet Black, Faye Valentine and Radical Ed: a rag-tag crew of bounty hunters on the run from their pasts as they hunt down the solar system’s most dangerous criminals. They’ll even save the world…for the right price.

Andre Nemec, Josh Appelbaum, Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg of Midnight Radio are serving as showrunners and executive producers. Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements are executive producing for Tomorrow Studios. Yasuo Miyakawa, Masayuki Ozaki, and Shin Sasaki are executive producing for Sunrise Inc., alongside Tetsu Fujimura and Matthew Weinberg. Watanabe will serve as a consultant on the project.

AWN reported earlier this year on Watanabe’s new series Carol & Tuesday, a collaboration with anime production studio Bones, which begins airing on Fuji TV’s new anime time slot, +Ultra, in April 2019. He also recently directly the acclaimed anime short Black Out 22, released last fall by Warner Bros., as a prologue to Blade Runner 2049, detailing events three years after the original Blade Runner movie, when a group of replicants detonates a nuclear warhead above Los Angeles.
