Netflix Game Controller App Tops App Store, Outperforming ChatGPT and Other AI Applications

Recently, Netflix’s accessory app, Netflix Game Controller, has unexpectedly claimed the top spot on Apple’s App Store free download chart. Not only has it maintained the leading position for multiple consecutive days, but it has also outperformed popular recent AI applications such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Meta AI, becoming the most watched mobile app at present. This phenomenon has not only broken the pattern of AI applications monopolizing the top positions on the chart for a long time, but also injected strong momentum into Netflix’s strategic layout of expanding its gaming business.
According to Appfigures, an application data analysis firm, Netflix Game Controller entered the top 10 of the App Store free download chart on April 2 and claimed the No. 1 spot for the first time on April 4. To date, it has occupied the top position for a total of 6 days. Additionally, Sensor Tower data shows that the app has exceeded 1 million downloads since April, a 500% increase compared to the 525,000 downloads in the entire month of March. Apptopia tracked 991,000 downloads of the app in the past 7 days, indicating a strong growth momentum. As of Wednesday, April 8, the app still ranked 8th on the chart, surpassing Telegram, TikTok, and Netflix’s main app itself (its ranking dropped slightly to 17th during the editing process).
Notably, Netflix Game Controller is not a new app—it was launched in 2023 and initially in limited testing. It gained further promotion after Netflix launched its “Game Night” multiplayer game suite in November last year. Its core function is to transform iPhones and iPads into game controllers, syncing with Netflix’s app on TVs (or computers), allowing users to control streaming games via mobile devices without the need for additional professional game controllers. Currently, the app supports multiplayer interactive games such as *Overcooked! All You Can Eat*, Boggle, and Pictionary, all of which are free for Netflix subscribers.
Industry analysts believe that the recent surge in downloads of the app is closely related to the expansion of Netflix’s game library. In March this year, Netflix added the popular game *Overcooked! All You Can Eat* to its game center; last week, it further enriched the multiplayer interactive game scene by adding three Jackbox party games, driving the growing demand for the controller app. In addition, holiday family gathering scenarios may also be a contributing factor—data analysis shows that the usage rate of Netflix streaming games increases significantly during family gatherings, and the demand for users to control multiplayer games through this app also rises accordingly.
It is worth noting that the app’s rise to the top is not due to paid marketing. Sam Aune, lead gaming analyst at Sensor Tower, stated that no relevant advertising activities for the app were detected, and its growth mainly relies on organic traffic. At the same time, Netflix’s recent promotion focus has been on the children’s gaming app Playground, which has no direct connection with the game controller app and has not significantly driven traffic to it. To date, Netflix has not commented on the sudden popularity of the app.
This phenomenon is regarded as a positive signal for Netflix’s gaming business. In recent years, Netflix’s gaming strategy has experienced adjustments such as leadership changes and layoffs, and the app’s top ranking indicates that its gaming layout is gradually gaining market recognition. It is reported that Netflix’s gaming business has currently accumulated a number of exclusive games and continues to expand, attempting to enhance user stickiness and enrich the streaming service ecosystem through game content.
At the same time, this change in the chart reflects the dynamic changes in App Store download trends. Recently, the competition for top positions among AI applications has been extremely fierce. Claude saw a surge in downloads due to OpenAI’s cooperation with the U.S. Department of Defense, while Meta AI’s downloads soared following the launch of its new model, Muse Spark. Previously, Elon Musk sued Apple and OpenAI in August last year, accusing both parties of “manipulating App Store rankings,” while Apple responded that the App Store is “fairly designed and unbiased.”
Industry insiders stated that the popularity of Netflix Game Controller not only reflects the growing demand for casual interactive games among users but also provides a new idea for the diversified development of streaming platforms—games are becoming an important tool for streaming services to enhance user stickiness and expand business boundaries. In the future, as Netflix’s game library continues to enrich and its technology optimizes, whether its gaming business can achieve further breakthroughs is worthy of continuous attention from the industry.
