Master concept modelling in virtual reality

The Gnomon Workshop has released Creating a Concept Model in VR, a guide to designing a futuristic vehicle using virtual reality modelling tool Gravity Sketch.

The three-hour masterclass, recorded by leading concept designer Glen Southern, also explores how to refine the base design in Cinema 4D and prepare it for rendering in Redshift.

Gravity Sketch – which is now available to download for free – is one of several VR design and modeling programs being used by artists in media and entertainment to create 3D models within a virtual environment.

In the new workshop, Glen Southern introduces the principles behind modeling in VR and the fundamental skills and workflows needed to create concept designs inside a virtual reality headset.

He begins with a first look at Gravity Sketch and the process of sketching in VR, before demonstrating his own concept design and block-out process.

Southern then takes the 3D model into Cinema 4D for further exploration and reveals his process for preparing models for the final rendering, done here with GPU renderer Redshift.
