GDC 2026 Unveils Major Upgrade: “Festival of Gaming” Opens Registration for Global Industry Gathering

——New Pass Structure, Cross-Disciplinary Content, and Celebratory Experience to Forge a New Era for the Games Industry
The Game Developers Conference (GDC), the world’s most influential B2B gaming industry event, has officially announced its 2026 edition will be comprehensively upgraded to the “GDC Festival of Gaming.” The event will take place from March 9 to 13, 2026, at the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco. With a more open approach, a simplified pass structure, and enriched content programming, the gathering aims to bring together global game developers, publishers, technologists, entrepreneurs, and media to collectively open a new chapter of connectivity and collaboration for the games industry.
Simplified Pass Structure Lowers Barrier to Entry
Responding to feedback from the global game community, GDC 2026 introduces only two pass types, fundamentally changing the previous complex system of nearly a dozen options:
Festivals Pass: Priced at an early-bird rate of $649, it provides full access to all sessions across all five days, networking activities, the Festival Hall (formerly the GDC Expo), and exclusive hotel discounts—a 45% reduction compared to the 2025 All-Access pass. Attendees will no longer be restricted from entering any session due to having the “wrong pass type.”
Game Changer Pass: Building on the Festivals Pass benefits, it includes premium seating, lounge access, fast-track entry to keynotes, concerts, and awards shows, access to the Luminaries Speaker Series, eligibility for the GamePlan business matching platform, GDC Vault access, and more, offering industry leaders a deeply collaborative experience.
“With a simplified pass structure, we’re welcoming more of the ecosystem to join us in San Francisco,” said Mark DeLoura, Executive Director of Innovation and Growth at GDC.
Cross-Disciplinary Content Design Breaks Down Industry Silos
GDC 2026 has restructured its content program around the game development lifecycle, covering the entire spectrum of disciplines—including design, programming, business and marketing, narrative, VR/AR/MR, visual arts, and independent games. Key new features include:
Luminaries Speaker Series: A three-day executive-level forum at the Blue Shield of California Theater at YBCA, featuring influential voices from gaming and adjacent industries;
GamePlan Business Platform: An invite-only deal-making engine connecting qualified executives and innovators through pre-scheduled, facilitated 1:1 meetings;
Split Award Ceremonies: The Independent Games Festival (IGF) Awards and Game Developers Choice Awards (GDCA) will be held on separate evenings for the first time, fully honoring the unique value of each.
Networking and City Experience Integrated Through GDC Nights
The reimagined “GDC Nights” series will run each evening from Monday through Thursday, featuring:
Monday’s Opening Night Social Mixer;
The return of Austin Wintory’s acclaimed “Developer’s Concert” on Tuesday;
Engagement with city landmarks such as the SF MOMA, Metreon entertainment center, and the newly opened Nintendo Store.
40-Year Legacy Launches a New Era of Industry Celebration
“This is a pivotal moment to bring the global games industry together,” said Nina Brown, President of GDC and Gaming Vertical Leader at Informa Festivals. “The GDC Festival of Gaming strengthens the connections between creators, leaders, and partners driving our industry forward.”
As the milestone 40th iteration of GDC, the Festival of Gaming is now open for registration. Industry professionals can apply via the official website for support programs targeting early-stage indies, startups, and academia, enabling broader participation in this annual gathering of the global game ecosystem.
