gamescom 2026 Theme: “Games Spark Excitement for the Future”
This year’s gamescom theme, “Games Spark Excitement for the Future,” carries a threetiered core message:
- Boosting Industry Confidence
At a time when the global digital industry is navigating a period of change and rising uncertainty, the event places “the future” at its centre to convey the games industry’s optimistic outlook on technology, creativity and longterm market growth. The focus is on forwardlooking directions such as studio startups, hardware and software innovation, crosssector partnerships, and new game development – using the positive value of games to counterbalance industry anxiety. - Expanding the Social Value of Games
The theme goes beyond pure entertainment, emphasising that game technology and interactive thinking can empower all industries. Accompanying the main event, the conference features two key tracks: “Games Empowering Democratic Education” and “The Spillover Effects of Game Innovation,” demonstrating how game technology can be applied in healthcare, manufacturing, education, government services and more – reshaping public and political perceptions of the games industry. - Embracing Inclusive and Diverse Industry Culture
Alongside the main event, gamescom presents the PRIDE diversity series, the Cosplay competition, and the GDQ charity speedrunning event – integrating openness, equality and inclusion into the “future” theme. This represents a gaming community that transcends geography, identity and circles, collectively building a futureoriented digital culture ecosystem, while also conveying social responsibility through charity merchandise sales.

- Impact on the games industry in Cologne and Europe
(a) Local economic and industrial boost (Cologne/North Rhine-Westphalia)
- Economic and industrial clustering effects
This year’s exhibition spaces sold out for the first time, with exhibitor numbers up 15% yearonyear, attracting over 1,500 companies from more than 70 countries to Cologne. This has directly driven shortterm revenue for venues, hotels, tourism, and retail. Organisers have already begun planning for venue expansion in 2027, reinforcing Cologne’s position as a global gaming industry hub over the long term, and attracting overseas game studios and multinational companies to establish European branches locally. - Governmentindustry collaboration elevates policy status
For the first time, the German Federal President personally attended the event and chaired the industry congress, marking the official entry of the games industry into Germany’s national policy dialogue. Regional government continues to support the exhibition and the gamescom dev conference, providing local small and mediumsized independent studios with investment, financing and technical matchmaking channels – strengthening Europe’s indigenous independent game development capacity. - Building the city’s digital culture brand
Cosplay, player camps and offline fan activities form a lasting cultural tourism IP, creating a unique European gamerelated travel and consumption experience, while driving longterm growth in local digital creative industries, esports and offline entertainment venues.
(b) Long-term impetus for the European games industry
- A core platform for global business collaboration
The event combines a B2B trade fair area with a B2C public experience zone. Major players including Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, and top studios from China, Japan and Korea gather together, allowing European studios to directly access global publishing, capital and distribution resources, accelerating the international expansion of European games. At the same time, it encourages multinational companies to set up R&D centres in Europe, improving the regional industry chain (hardware, art, localisation, esports). - Steering the direction of European game technology innovation
Centred on the “future” theme, the event showcases cuttingedge projects such as AIdriven games, immersive interaction, crossmedia digital content, and charity speedrunning (the European debut of GDQ) – unifying the discourse on innovation across the European industry. Accompanying industry conferences bridge games with manufacturing, healthcare and education, fostering new digital interaction business models and expanding revenue streams for the industry. - Forging a unified European gaming culture consensus
By promoting diversity, inclusion and positive social value as a unifying narrative, the event brings together gaming communities from across Europe and reduces regional fragmentation. Meanwhile, charity and publicinterest forums help push for EUlevel support policies for the games industry and digital culture, raising Europe’s overall voice in the global games market.
(c) Global influence
Guided by this year’s theme, the event serves as a bellwether for the gaming industry throughout the year – with major console titles, AAA releases, independent gems and cuttingedge hardware all unveiled together, defining global gaming trends for the next 1-3 years. The largescale participation of emerging manufacturing and development companies from China, Southeast Asia and beyond accelerates creative and market exchange between East and West, driving integrated development across the global games industry.
Background: gamescom
gamescom traces its roots to the Leipzig Games Convention, first held in 2002. As exhibition space there became constrained, major players including Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo pushed for a relocation, and the first gamescom was officially held in Cologne in 2009, adopting a dualformat model combining a B2B trade area and a B2C public experience zone.
Thanks to its prime location and largescale venue, the event quickly grew into Europe’s premier gaming event. Its opening night show (ONL) and developer conferences have steadily reinforced its industry influence, placing it alongside E3 and Tokyo Game Show as a global toptier gaming event. In 20202021, the event shifted to online and hybrid formats due to the pandemic, before returning fully offline in 2022. Following the permanent cancellation of E3, gamescom has risen to become the world’s most important comprehensive gaming industry event.
In recent years, organisers have pursued a global expansion strategy, launching editions in Asia and Latin America, attracting exhibitors from all over the world.
gamescom 2026, themed “Games Spark Excitement for the Future,” marks the first time Germany’s Federal President has attended in person. With increased emphasis on how game technology can empower education, healthcare, manufacturing and other sectors, the event – against a backdrop of AI transformation and market volatility – serves to boost industry confidence and build a global platform for creativity, commerce and exchange.
