Final Fantasy XIV May Come to Nintendo Switch 2, Yoshi-P Hints at Port Potential

Recently, Naoki Yoshida, producer and director of the globally popular MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV, revealed in an overseas interview that the game may potentially launch on Nintendo’s next-generation console (widely referred to as the Switch 2). This statement immediately sparked tremendous excitement and anticipation among players worldwide.

When discussing the possibility of expanding the game’s platform availability, Yoshida mentioned that the development team has been “closely monitoring new hardware platforms.” He specifically noted, “Regarding Nintendo’s new console, if its specifications and performance can meet the requirements for running Final Fantasy XIV and provide players with a smooth and stable experience, we would be very willing to actively explore the possibility of bringing the game to this platform.”
Although Yoshida did not announce any concrete plans or a timeline and emphasized that any port would depend on technical feasibility, this marks the first time Square Enix has openly and positively signaled its willingness to consider bringing Final Fantasy XIV to the Switch 2.

Since its revival, Final Fantasy XIV has become one of the most successful MMORPGs globally, boasting a massive player base. The game is currently available on PS5, PS4, PC (Windows/macOS), and Xbox Series X|S. If it successfully launches on the portability-focused Switch 2, players would, for the first time, be able to truly experience the vast world of Eorzea “anytime, anywhere,” achieving seamless switching between home console and handheld gameplay. This would significantly expand the game’s user base and play scenarios.
Industry analysts point out that this move holds great significance for both parties. For Square Enix, the Switch 2’s extensive install base represents a substantial market that cannot be ignored. For Nintendo, attracting a heavyweight live-service game like Final Fantasy XIV would greatly diversify its new console’s game library, enhance its appeal to core gamers, and strengthen its online service ecosystem.
As of now, Nintendo has not officially announced detailed specifications or a release date for its next-generation console. However, numerous reports suggest that its performance will see a significant improvement over the current Switch, providing technical feasibility for porting large-scale online games like Final Fantasy XIV.
“Warriors of Light” around the world are eagerly awaiting further developments. We will continue to monitor the latest updates on this matter.
