Demand for Anime triples on Netflix

Netflix Reveals 50% of Global Members Watch Anime, Doubles Down on Strategy with Expanded Slate
Netflix has revealed that over 50% of its global members—amounting to more than 150 million households—now watch anime, a statistic that underscores the genre’s transformation from a niche category into a powerhouse global content pillar. The announcement was made at Anime Expo in Los Angeles, where the streamer unveiled a slate of new and returning titles to support its expanding anime strategy.
The company shared updated viewership data highlighting the category’s explosive growth, noting that anime viewership on the platform has tripled over the past five years. In 2024 alone, 33 anime titles appeared in Netflix’s Global Top 10 (Non-English) rankings, and anime content was viewed over 1 billion times globally. To capitalize on this demand, Netflix has invested heavily in localization, offering dubbed audio in up to 33 languages, with 80-90% of users opting to watch dubbed versions.
Leading the upcoming slate is the hit action series “Sakamoto Days,” which will begin streaming new weekly episodes on July 14. Other high-profile releases include “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2,” a sequel to the acclaimed 2022 dystopian series from Studio Trigger, and “My Melody & Kuromi,” a new stop-motion series featuring Sanrio’s beloved characters, premiering July 24.
This significant investment in both new IP and established franchises reinforces Netflix’s commitment to anime as a key driver for global subscriber engagement and retention.
