The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences will present on Friday, September 21 “Women in Indie Animation” — part of its continued monthly residency at cinephile-devoted theater Metrograph in Manhattan. The 7 p.m. screening will showcase 90 minutes of work from groundbreaking artists Signe Baumane, Emily Hubley, Candy Kugel and Debra Solomon, followed by a conversation with all four filmmakers, moderated by Peggy Stern.

The program includes:

  • Signe Baumane’s Rocks in My Pockets trailer (2017), Teat Beat of Sex Episodes 1-3 (2008) and Birth (2009).
  • Emily Hubley’s Pigeon Within (2000), Hail (2011), And/Or (2012), Brainworm Billy (2018) and “Nico” from Danny Says (2015).
  • Candy Kugel’s BuzzCo Demo Reel, A Warm Reception in L.A. (1988), Fast Food Matador (1991), The Last Time (2013) and I, Candy trailer (2018).
  • Debra Solomon’s Lizzie Maguire clip, I Wanna Know Everyone in My Building (2007), My Kingdom (2014) and Teach Me to Be a Woman (2008).

The Academy began a yearlong residency at Metrograph in July 2017, bringing exciting and entertaining programs to the big screen. Programs in Academy at Metrograph have and continue to feature onstage conversations with filmmakers and scholars of motion pictures, tributes, newsreels, rarely seen clips from past Oscar ceremonies, and home movies from Hollywood legends. This monthly series highlights unique archival elements, including recent restorations and film prints from the Academy Film Archive by celebrating classic moments from the Academy’s 90-year history.
