LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight Hands-On Preview: Arkham Meets LEGO Charm in a Fully Realized Gotham

Developed by TT Games and published by Warner Bros. Games, the open-world action-adventure game LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight launches globally on May 22 (Switch 2 version TBA later this year). After a three-hour early hands-on session, outlets including GamesRadar agreed: while it doesn’t fully replicate the hardcore feel of the Arkham series, the game delivers the most mature and immersive LEGO Batman experience to date, thanks to its vibrant, charming LEGOfied open-world Gotham, solid character design, and classic LEGO humour.

1. Paying Tribute to Arkham: Combat and Stealth Borrow from the Classic, with a Lighter Touch

The game explicitly takes inspiration from Rocksteady’s Arkham series, recreating systems such as counterbased melee combat, grappling and gliding, detective vision, and Batmobile driving – giving players a satisfying “become Batman” feeling. Jimmy Sedota, Assistant Design Director at TT Games, said: “The original Arkham Asylum truly made you feel like Batman. We used that as a foundation and built a combat experience from the ground up that fits the LEGO style.”

Due to the geometric shapes and joint limitations of LEGO bricks, the animation transitions and fluidity of combat don’t match the Arkham series, and the stealth mechanics are somewhat simplified (no crouch button). However, the overall skill floor is lower and the pace is lighter, making it familyfriendly and accessible to casual players. The Batmobile handling, meanwhile, is rated better than in Arkham Knight – more agile and not drawn out.

2. Focused Character Roster: Seven Playable Characters with Distinct Abilities

Breaking away from the traditional LEGO game model of a “sea of characters”, this game streamlines the roster to seven core playable characters, each with unique skills and individual skill trees – achieving a “quality over quantity” design upgrade:

Batman, Robin, Catwoman, Nightwing, Batgirl, Talia al Ghul, Commissioner Gordon

The design team emphasised that “Batman doesn’t work alone.” Each character deeply respects their comic persona and abilities. For example, Catwoman can use her whip to control cats to sneak into ventilation ducts, offering varied gameplay.

3. LEGO Gotham: Unprecedentedly Vibrant and Adorable

The biggest highlight of the game is the brickbuilt openworld Gotham City, praised as the most charming and immersive version of Gotham in any LEGO game to date. Skyscrapers, streets, and landmarks are all constructed from LEGO bricks, with rich interactive environments and dense Easter eggs. The lighthearted, whimsical atmosphere creates a stark contrast to the dark tone of the Arkham series. Mainline puzzles are friendly and accessible, while side challenges like Riddler puzzles offer some thoughtful difficulty, catering to players of all ages.

4. Classic LEGO Flavour: Humour, Gags, and DC Love

The game retains the signature humorous style of the LEGO series, filled with deepcut DC comics, film, and video game references, as well as slapstick gags. Gotham citizens earnestly treat Batman as a “giant bat”. Combat takedown animations are full of creative whimsy. Voice casting and character interactions deliver plentiful laughs. The classic loop of collecting studs, unlocking costumes and vehicles, and gradually filling the Batcave display remains as fun, pure, and therapeutic as ever.

5. Media Verdict: Not an Arkham Substitute, But the Best LEGO Batman

The handson media concluded: LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight doesn’t need to be the next Arkham – it just needs to be itself. By paying tribute to the classics while staying true to the joyful essence of LEGO games, it offers a lower barrier, a lighter experience, and a cuter art style, allowing players of all ages to enjoy being Batman and the BatFamily.

The game launches on May 22 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. The Switch 2 release date is TBA later this year. For DC fans, LEGO game enthusiasts, and players looking for a lighthearted openworld title, this is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated family blockbusters of mid2026.
