Pixar Stages the Decade’s Biggest Comeback as New Disney Movie Sets Box Office Record

Pixar Animation Studios has made a triumphant return to the big screen with its latest original film, Hoppers, delivering the studio’s best opening weekend for an original movie in nearly a decade.
According to industry data, the animal-world-themed animated feature grossed $46 million domestically and $88 million worldwide in its opening weekend, marking Pixar’s strongest debut for an original film since Coco in 2017.
Critical and Commercial Success Breaks the Original Film Slump
Hoppers significantly exceeded industry expectations of a $35-40 million domestic opening. This performance surpasses recent Pixar original releases such as Onward ($65.6 million global debut) and Elemental ($65.1 million). The success signals a major comeback for the animation giant as it navigates the post-pandemic era.
While Inside Out 2 previously achieved a phenomenal $1.7 billion worldwide, Pixar’s original films have faced significant struggles in recent years. Both Lightyear and Elio underperformed, and although Elemental eventually turned a profit after a disappointing start, it failed to reach the financial heights of the studio’s past classics.
Critical Acclaim Suggests Strong Box Office Longevity
Hoppers has earned overwhelming praise from both audiences and critics. The film holds an impressive 94% fresh rating and audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, along with an A CinemaScore. Critics have widely hailed it as “Pixar’s best film since Coco.”
In his review for ScreenRant, Gregory Nussen celebrates Hoppers as “a welcome return to a time of yore, when kids were trusted to pick up on important themes — all while laughing their heads off.”
Directed by Daniel Chong and written by Jesse Andrews from a story by Chong, the 105-minute film follows Mabel (voiced by Piper Kurda), a 19-year-old environmental activist determined to stop Mayor Jerry (Jon Hamm) from building a new highway in the fictional city of Beaverton. When she discovers that her college professors have developed technology to transfer human consciousness into animal-like robots, Mabel hijacks a beaver robot and joins forces with local wildlife, including beaver King George (Bobby Moynihan), to save their habitat.
Critics note that the film seamlessly cycles through comedy, drama, thriller, and even touches of Pixar-style horror, representing a return to the studio’s golden era when they effortlessly blended genres.
Star-Studded Voice Cast
Beyond the lead performances, Hoppers features an impressive ensemble voice cast including Meryl Streep, Dave Franco, Melissa Villaseñor, Vanessa Bayer, and the late Isiah Whitlock, Jr. While the sheer number of characters limits individual standout moments, the cast works harmoniously together, bringing additional life to Pixar’s always-stellar animation.
Shifting Industry Landscape
The strong performance of Hoppers stands in stark contrast to Warner Bros.’ new release The Bride!, directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal. Despite a $90 million production budget and $50 million in marketing, The Bride! opened to just $7.3 million domestically and $13.6 million worldwide. The disappointing debut not only breaks Warner Bros.’ streak of nine consecutive No. 1 openings but marks one of the studio’s weakest performances since The Alto Knights.
Industry observers suggest this contrast highlights shifting audience preferences toward family-friendly original animation and away from high-budget arthouse projects with uncertain commercial appeal.
Future Competition and Industry Implications
Hoppers will soon face new competition from A24’s Undertone and the Colleen Hoover adaptation Reminders of Him, testing its staying power. However, its spring release timing and strong critical reception position the film well for continued success.
For Pixar, this success comes at a crucial moment. Following years of mixed results for non-franchise titles, the performance of Hoppers may encourage the studio to greenlight more original projects. Looking ahead, Pixar has several sequels in development, including Toy Story 5 (June 2025), Incredibles 3 (2028), Coco 2 (2029), and a reportedly developing third Monsters Inc. film. Balancing these franchise releases with original storytelling remains the studio’s long-term creative challenge.
Hoppers is now playing in theaters worldwide, delivering what many critics are calling a heartfelt, hilarious, and enthralling return to form for the legendary animation studio.
