Amazon Announces $35 Billion Investment in India, Outpacing Microsoft’s Commitment

In the investment race for the Indian market, Amazon has once again demonstrated its ambition to leapfrog competitors. Just one day after Microsoft announced a $17.5 billion investment plan for India, the e-commerce giant recently revealed it will invest over $35 billion in the country by 2030, doubling the amount committed by its rival. This also marks a significant expansion of Amazon’s previously pledged $26 billion investment made in 2023, which includes $12.7 billion dedicated to cloud services and artificial intelligence infrastructure.
Distinct Investment Focuses
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella stated yesterday that its investment will focus on “building the infrastructure, skills, and sovereign capabilities needed for India’s AI-first future.” Key projects include a Hyderabad data center scheduled to begin operations in mid-2026, which will be Microsoft’s largest hyperscale data center region in India, covering an area roughly equivalent to two Eden Gardens stadiums combined.
In contrast, Amazon’s investment strategy is more diversified. Amit Agarwal, Senior Vice President of Amazon’s Global Emerging Markets, explained that the new investment will concentrate on three key areas: AI-driven digital transformation, export growth, and job creation. Data shows that from 2010 to 2024, Amazon has already invested a cumulative $40 billion in India, successfully digitizing 10 million small and medium-sized enterprises and achieving cumulative exports worth $20 billion.
Heating Competition in the AI Arena
Despite their different investment priorities, competition between the two tech giants in cloud computing and AI is intensifying. Alongside its investment announcement, Microsoft introduced sovereign cloud service offerings for Indian customers and pledged to provide AI skills training to 20 million people by 2030. The company is integrating advanced AI features into two key digital platforms of the Ministry of Labour and Employment: e-Shram and the National Career Service.
Amazon plans to use its investment to create AI-powered shopping experiences for consumers and develop intelligent tools for small businesses. Consumers will gain access to features like the visual search tool LensAI and the conversational shopping assistant Rufus, while small businesses can utilize AI tools such as Seller Assistant and Next Gen Selling. The company has also committed to providing AI education opportunities for 4 million public school students through AI curricula, technology career tours, and other initiatives.
Strategic Considerations Behind the Investment Boom
This wave of investment comes at a critical juncture for India’s digital economy development. In October last year, Google announced a $15 billion investment to build a large-scale AI hub in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. Analysts note that tech giants are ramping up their commitments to the Indian market, drawn by its vast digital potential and the race to secure infrastructure advantages in the AI era.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) currently operates two cloud regions in India, in Mumbai and Hyderabad. In January this year, the company announced an $8.3 billion investment to expand cloud infrastructure in the Asia-Pacific (Mumbai) Region in Maharashtra. Agarwal emphasized, “Based on the investments made and commitments achieved, Amazon has become the largest foreign investor, the largest export creator, and one of the largest job creators in India.”
With the implementation of the new $35 billion investment plan, India’s digital economy is poised to reach a new milestone. The strategic competition among tech giants is sketching an innovation blueprint filled with intelligent technology for this South Asian nation.
