Cocos Game Engine Acquired for $72 Million as Chinese Firm SUD Accelerates Cloud Application Strategy

Recently, gamified interactive cloud service provider Suddenly Technology (SUD) announced the acquisition of the renowned open-source game engine Cocos for $72 million. With a long-term focus on developing cloud-based platforms for application software, this acquisition aims to integrate the Cocos engine and its technical team to strengthen SUD’s capabilities in content interaction and visual development, forming a more comprehensive service ecosystem.
Although the specific terms of the transaction have not been fully disclosed, SUD has clearly stated in its strategic plan that it will conduct a “deep integration” of the Cocos engine and its team. Notably, the upcoming Cocos 4 version will fully return to a global, permanent, and free pure open-source model, releasing all core engine code and previously undisclosed CLI code. Meanwhile, the new developer tool PinK will fully support AI programming and come pre-equipped with a rich ecosystem of plugins, including AI Native Kit, Agent, and MCP.
This integration is expected to significantly enhance the functional completeness of SUD’s platform, while the Cocos team will also gain access to broader resource support. In a joint announcement, both parties indicated that SUD and Cocos would complement each other in terms of user traffic and technological expertise: SUD GI Cloud and SUD GI AD’s global traffic resources will empower the Cocos developer ecosystem, while the SUD OpenPaaS platform will incorporate Cocos’ technical expertise to better serve traffic platforms.
As an open-source toolchain, Cocos was initially known for lightweight 2D game development, with subsequent versions expanding to support full 3D graphics creation. Although it supports console and PC platforms, the engine is primarily active in the mobile and web game sectors, holding a particularly important position in China’s mini-game ecosystem. According to official statistics, Cocos currently has over 1.7 million developers worldwide.
The Cocos team is currently advancing the development of Cocos 4. SUD has confirmed that despite the change in ownership, Cocos 4 will continue to operate under an open-source model, with a commitment to releasing some previously closed-source code to the community. The official release date for this version has not yet been announced.
