Supercell to Shut Down Squad Busters, Final Update Scheduled for December

Recently, renowned mobile game developer Supercell officially announced the gradual shutdown of its team battle game Squad Busters, which was launched globally last year. The game’s final content update is scheduled for December 2025, with plans to terminate all services entirely by mid-2026.
Following a short soft-launch period, Squad Busters made its global debut in May 2024 with a star-studded marketing campaign featuring international celebrities such as Chris Hemsworth, Christina Ricci, Auliʻi Cravalho, and Ken Jeong, generating significant market attention.
The game initially performed strongly. According to estimates from third-party data firm Appmagic, Squad Busters has generated approximately $68 million in total revenue for Supercell to date, accumulating nearly 55 million downloads. However, the game’s revenue sustainability proved challenging. Data shows its monthly revenue declined significantly in 2025, falling below that of Supercell’s legacy title Boom Beach in March, and subsequently below the company’s newer title, mo.co, in July. As of September 2025, the game’s monthly in-app purchase revenue had dropped to around $260,000, according to Appmagic.
Despite the high-profile launch and a solid start, Squad Busters failed to maintain long-term user engagement and commercial success, ultimately leading to Supercell’s decision to discontinue the service. This move highlights the intense and competitive nature of the mobile gaming market, where even products from industry giants face severe challenges.
“At Supercell, we celebrate what we learn from our failures, and Squad Busters was an opportunity to apply some of those lessons, especially from previous games with long beta periods,” explained Supercell. “We wanted to move faster, take bold risks, and learn directly from a global audience instead of waiting years in a limited release.”
“What we learned was that we had got it wrong. The game did not meet the high expectations that both you, our players, and we at Supercell have for our games, and by early 2025, we faced a true crossroads, either accept that Squad Busters might never grow into the kind of global phenomenon we dreamed of, or take a big creative swing. We chose the latter.”
“The introduction of Heroes was the boldest game change of this scale in Supercell’s live game history, an attempt to redefine what Squad Busters could be. But despite the team’s best efforts and your continued support, we were not able to find a lasting solution to its core problems.”
Supercell added: “After months of reflection, we have made the extremely difficult decision to end active development of Squad Busters. While this is not the outcome we hoped for, we believe it is the right decision to stay true to Supercell’s goal of creating games that players can love for years.”
Supercell stated that it will continue to support the player community until the game’s final closure and thanked all players for their love and support since Squad Busters’ launch.
