The State of Southeast Asia’s Games Industry in 2025: From Mobile Dominance to Creative Development, Market Continues to Grow

The Southeast Asian games industry generated $6.2 billion in consumer spending in 2024, demonstrating robust growth momentum. The mobile games segment accounted for 73% of total revenue, maintaining its dominant position in the market. Despite talent shortages posing challenges to the industry, a growing number of companies are driving innovation and sustainable development through partnerships and collaboration.

According to the newly released Southeast Asia Games Industry Report 2025, the region has become one of the world’s fastest-growing games markets. A large young population, increasing internet penetration, and a growing diversity of payment methods have collectively fueled rapid market expansion.

Mobile games, as the core driver, have performed particularly well in countries such as Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines. Mid-core to hard-core games, especially role-playing and competitive titles, have been the primary sources of revenue growth. At the same time, local development teams are beginning to gain prominence, integrating cultural elements with global gameplay to attract attention both regionally and internationally.

However, talent supply remains a key constraint on industry development. To address this challenge, more game companies are partnering with educational institutions, international studios, and technology platforms to jointly promote talent cultivation and technological advancement. Several governments in the region have also begun incorporating games and interactive media into their digital economy strategies, providing policy and resource support for the industry.

Beyond the continued dominance of mobile gaming, the Southeast Asian market is also showing growth potential in PC and cloud gaming. With further improvements in infrastructure and rising user demand for high-quality gaming experiences, multi-platform development is becoming an emerging trend.

“Southeast Asia is well-known as a global leader in mobile gaming and esports,” explains Nam Nguyen, regional director for South Asia at co-development giant Virtuos.

“We have a young and vibrant population, rapidly improving digital infrastructure, and a passionate player base. However, the dominance of mobile gaming and esports can overshadow the fact that the whole games industry in Southeast Asia is growing fast, especially in development and creativity.

“The region’s games market is projected to grow at a 3.7% CAGR from 2024 to 2027, ahead of the global average of 3.2%, according to Newzoo’s 2025 Global Games Market Report. Now a key hub for both co-development and insourcing, Southeast Asia’s games market is fuelled by foreign investments attracted by competitive costs and ambitious local studios developing original IPs.”

Sensor Tower research shows that South East Asia accounted for 1.93bn downloads in the first quarter of 2025, making it the second-largest market in the world, behind India. That’s a 3% increase quarter-on-quarter.

“This underscores not only the region’s high level of user engagement but also the expanding demand for mobile gaming content,” Pattanateacha continues.

Industry experts note that the Southeast Asian games market is transitioning from being “traffic-driven” to “content and creativity-driven.” In the future, products with cultural resonance and innovative gameplay will be more competitive, while cross-regional and cross-sector collaborations will become key drivers of sustained industry growth.
