AI IRL: The Tech Advancing Safety, Sound, and Human Experience

AI-driven predictive safety is shifting fleet management from reactive to proactive, making roads safer in real time.
AI-powered audio is revolutionizing entertainment, turning passive sports spectators into active participants.
Imagine stepping into a stadium where you don’t just hear the roar of the crowd—you feel it. Or driving a vehicle that warns you of potential hazards before you even notice them. Thanks to AI’s rapid advancements in edge computing and real-time data processing, these futuristic concepts are now a reality. AI is no longer just a software-based tool—it’s reshaping the physical world.
At the heart of this transformation is “collaborative intelligence” which means people are leveraging AI to solve complex challenges. Cutting-edge advancements in tech make it all possible. AI models can run on edge devices thanks to AI-optimized hardware. Plus low-power processors help enable AI to operate in remote or battery-powered environments without draining resources.
Many enterprises are embracing these opportunities to enhance decision-making and unlock new value. By merging human intuition with machine intelligence, businesses are discovering groundbreaking applications for AI in real-world environments.
Collaborative intelligence was a central theme of our Fall 2024 LIFT Labs Accelerator, where eight startups teamed up with Comcast business units to explore cutting-edge AI applications. The program focused on solving high-impact challenges, from real-time interaction at the edge to scalable model accuracy and privacy-first personalization—all critical elements for making AI practical, efficient, and responsible.
Here are two major lessons about AI’s physical-world potential.
AI in the Driver’s Seat: Making Fleet Operations Safer
Traditional fleet management relies on tracking past driving behavior—things like hard braking or quick acceleration. But what if AI could anticipate dangerous situations before they happen? That’s exactly what Nauto is doing. By using AI-powered computer vision, Nauto acts as a real-time copilot, warning drivers of external dangers like pedestrians and risky maneuvers. It also flags in-cabin distractions like drowsy driving or cell phone use. Its predictive capability goes beyond conventional telematics, helping drivers course-correct in real time rather than just analyzing what went wrong after the fact.
Through the accelerator, Nauto tested their solution within controlled environments to prove the benefits of the technology for drivers and fleet managers.
Feel the Sound: AI-Driven Sensory Experiences Are Here
Entertainment is no longer just something you watch—it’s something you experience. Edge Sound Research is pushing the boundaries of audio technology, creating systems that allow fans to feel sound as well as hear it. The startup’s innovative speakers transform any object, including stadium seats, into a sound source, delivering a fully immersive sound experience that can be both heard and felt in real time. The company also offers groundbreaking technology that revolutionizes how production teams capture, process, and reproduce audio.
After the accelerator, Edge Sound Research teamed up with Comcast to test its advanced stadium seats to enhance the fan experience at sporting events.
