The 9th annual alt.ctrl.GDC showcases some of the most unique, offbeat, and innovative controllers in modern gaming. Visitors can come into this collaborative community space to play video games using alternative controllers, meet the developers behind these projects, and vote for their favorite to receive the Audience Award. Last year’s winner, PASTRY PANIC (with cat) by Yong Zhen Zhou, used haptic feedback controls to simulate the experience of making dough.
This exciting GDC exhibit is being co-helmed by veteran indie curator John Polson. GDC welcomes submissions of one-of-a-kind game peripherals, contraptions, and novelties that enhance game experiences, challenge our expectations, and encourage sustainability and accessibility.
GDC is looking specifically for games that use alternate/custom hardware in interesting, creative, or groundbreaking ways that improve accessibility for players and the industry at large. This year’s event aims to highlight accessibility in games, so please take this into consideration when submitting your application.
If you’re looking for inspiration, head here for our archive of previous exhibitors.
The deadline to submit is Friday, December 2, 2022 at 11:59pm PT, and you can apply directly here. There’s no cost to apply.
If your entry is chosen, your team will be asked to showcase their product to GDC attendees at the alt.ctrl.GDC exhibit area. You’ll also receive two All Access (or equivalent) passes and two Expo (or equivalent) passes to GDC 2023, equaling four total passes for the event.
The alt.ctrl.GDC showcase takes place March 22 to March 24, 2023, during the final three days of GDC 2023 at the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco. For more information, including how to submit, visit alt.ctrl.GDC’s website. You’re also welcome to contact John Polson via email with any additional questions.
GDC returns to San Francisco this March 20-24, 2023, and registration is now open! For more information, be sure to visit our website and follow the #GDC23 hashtag on social media.
