From beloved brand reboots to big deals for ZAG’s Miraculous

Buyers have been all over rebooted, refreshed and reinvigorated brands this year—and it turns out that Kidscreen’s readers are equally interested. News about popular IPs being adapted, acquired or licensed for consumer products attracted the most views this year, as we look back at some of 2021′s most-read stories from the Kidscreen Daily newsletter.

Two separate items about animated series Miraculous—Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir (pictured) ended up in first and third spots on our most-read list. Produced by ZAG and ON Kids & Family, the show has been on air since 2015 and currently has a fifth season in the works, with no signs of slowing down.

Other brands our readers were eager to keep up on include Final Fantasy IX, Thomas & Friends, L.O.L. Surprise and My Little Pony.

Our Kidscreen Awards results attracted a lot of attention again this year.

#1: Disney+ gets Miraculous by Ryan Tuchow

All five seasons of the popular TV series from ZAG and ON Kids & Family were picked up for a worldwide launch on the SVOD.

#2: Cyber Group lines up Final Fantasy IX by Ryan Tuchow

The Paris-based studio inked a co-development and co-production deal with Japan’s Square Enix to adapt its popular video game title into an animated series for kids.

#3: Disney Channel gets more Miraculous by Ryan Tuchow

The linear channel acquired seasons four and five of Miraculous—Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir to air in the US.

#4: Cartoon Network, Netflix snap up new 2D Thomas by Alexandra Whyte

Mattel Television and Nelvana announced plans to re-envision Thomas & Friends as a 2D-animated series in 2020, and new broadcasters started to board the train earlier this year.

#5: Netflix to launch first L.O.L. Surprise movie by Ryan Tuchow

MGA Entertainment produced a 45-minute mixed-media adventure film, which the SVOD picked up for an October premiere.

#6: My Little Pony rides high with new CP by Elizabeth Foster

Entertainment One refreshed the horse brand this year for its parentco Hasbro, with a new feature film and animated series that paved the way for a whole range of new products.

#7: The Wiggles adds members, launches new show by Ryan Tuchow

The 30-year-old Australian kids music group brought in four new people for the first time in the band’s history, and prepped a series for YouTube.

#8: Kidscreen Awards 2021 winners by Jeremy Dickson

Despite everyone being stuck at home during the pandemic, the industry still celebrated big at this year’s virtual awards ceremony.

#9: Nickelodeon lines up trio of movies by Alexandra Whyte

SpringHill and Genius Entertainment are producing Fantasy Football, Nickelodeon and Awesomeness adapt New York Times bestselling YA book series Hush Hush, and a live-action/animated Blue’s Clues movie is in the works.
