The Lion King’ Surpasses ‘Frozen’ As Highest-Grossing Animated Feature Of All-Time

The Walt Disney Company has finally found a worthy competitor that can beat its films at the box office: The Walt Disney Company.

The global gross of the Walt Disney Company’s animated remake of The Lion King has now surpassed another one of the studio’s films, Frozen, to become the highest-grossing animated feature of all-time.

Last weekend, the Jon Favreau-directed remake added $71.4 million to its total, growing its cume to $1.33 billion, surpassing Frozen’s $1.27 billion. Frozen had held the title since 2014, when it edged out Disney-Pixar’s Toy Story 3 for the record.

It’s truly the circle of life for The Lion King — the original hand-drawn version of the film had held the title for highest-grossing animated film of all-time from its release in 1994 until 2010 when Toy Story 3 took over.

Here’s the current standings of the five highest-grossing animated films:

The Lion King (2019): $1.33 billion

Frozen (2013): $1.27 billion

Incredibles 2 (2018): $1.24 billion

Minions (2015): $1.15 billion

Toy Story 3 (2010): $1.06 bilion
