The Development Status of the 5G Industry

5G(5th-generation) is the abbreviation of the fifth generation mobile communication technology. However, different from 4G, 3G and 2G, 5G is not an independent and brand new wireless access technology, but a general term for the technological evolution of the existing wireless access technology (including 2G, 3G, 4G and WiFi), as well as the integrated solutions of some new supplementary wireless access technologies.

Although China’s mobile communication technology started late, it has become a global leader in 5G standard research and development. The main functions of 5G are audio + SMS + Internet access + video + smart home/unmanned driving/telemedicine, etc. The Chinese government, enterprises, scientific research institutions and other parties attach great importance to the cutting-edge layout. China’s research and development of 5G technology has been leading the world, holding the right to speak in the formulation of global 5G standards. 5G will provide us with rates that peak above 10Gpbs and stabilize between 1Gpbs and 2Gpbs, with higher transmission rates and less time.

At the government level, the top-level frontier layout has been gradually expanded, and the breakthrough direction of 5G technology has been clarified. First, China has clarified the development goal and direction of 5G in the future from the national macro level. Second, we will actively promote breakthroughs in 5G core technologies through major national projects.

At the enterprise level, domestic leading enterprises have won first mover advantage. Huawei, ZTE, Datang and other leading domestic communication equipment enterprises attach great importance to the research and development layout of 5G technology which has been recognized by the industry in terms of standard formulation and industrial application.

According to the latest Global 5G Competition released by the American Association for Wireless Communications and Internet (CTIA) on April 3, 2019, the US is ahead of South Korea in 5G in 2018, rose from third place in the previous year to first, level with China, then followed by South Korea, Japan, Britain and Italy. In addition, it is expected that the US will have 92 5G commercial deployment plans, South Korea will have 48, UK will have 16, by the end of 2019. From 2020 to 2035, 5G will contribute US$2.1 trillion to the annual net worth of annual GDP.

From 2020, 5G is expected to generate direct commercial output of about CNY484 billion, and will grow to CNY 3.3 trillion in 2025 and CNY 6.3 trillion in 2030, respectively, with a compound annual growth rate of 29% over a decade. In terms of indirect output, 5G will generate CNY 1.2 trillion, CNY 6.3 trillion and CNY 10.6 trillion of indirect economic output in 2020, 2025 and 2030, respectively, with a compound annual growth rate of 24%. In addition, 5G is expected to drive more than 8 million jobs by 2030, mainly in telecommunications operations and Internet service companies.

According to a report released by the Global Mobile Communications Association, the number of 5G users worldwide is expected to reach 1.36 billion by 2025. Among them, China has 454 million 5G users, the largest in the world. Second, the total number of 5G users in Europe is 203 million. The total number of 5G users in the United States can reach 189 million, 95 million in Japan, 37 million in South Korea. China has great advantages in promoting emerging industries or technologies because of its huge users and market demand.
