Launch New Initiative “GGJ Micro-Missions: Small Projects, Big Impact” – Empowering Indie Studios and Emerging Talent

*Applications for the first cohort of indie studios open now. The program aims to provide paid hands-on opportunities for emerging talent, supporting over 25 indie studios and engaging more than 500 participants globally in its first year.*
June 2026 – Global Game Jam (GGJ) and the Endless Foundation today announced the launch of a brand-new industry support program: “GGJ Micro-Missions: Small Projects, Big Impact.” The initiative connects indie studios with aspiring game professionals through short-form, paid micro-projects in the fields of art, audio, and QA testing. It accelerates indie development while paving the way for emerging talent to launch their careers in games.
Over the next year, GGJ will select a group of indie studios to receive microgrants of up to $2,500 USD each. Selected studios will work with GGJ to break down their active game development efforts into self-contained “micromissions.” Participants can review available missions posted by studios, submit their work or sign up for assignments, and receive payment upon selection or completion.
- This innovative program directly addresses two persistent challenges in the games industry:Indie studios often lack flexible, shortterm, affordable production support during development.
Emerging talent has few opportunities to gain real professional experience, build their portfolios, and genuinely contribute to shipped games. Each micromission is designed as a focused task that can be completed in under 48 hours. Participants will gain realworld project experience, portfolioready original work, and paid compensation. Studios, in turn, receive highquality creative assets and valuable QA support. The pilot launches with three core micromission categories: Artwork, Audio, and QA Testing.
“Many talented indie teams hit development bottlenecks due to capacity constraints, while at the same time countless emerging creators are eager to prove themselves but can’t find a way in.”
– A GGJ representative. “The MicroMissions program creates a lowbarrier, hightrust, compensated framework where both sides can naturally meet. This is not just about task distribution – it’s an industry experiment in collaborative growth.”
During the pilot phase, Global Game Jam will coordinate participant onboarding, payment management, and overall project administration. The program is expected to support at least 25 indie studios, engage more than 500 participants worldwide, and generate an estimated 1,500–2,000 paid micromissions in its first year.
- Why participate? For emerging talent:Gain real industry experience, enrich your portfolio, earn compensation, and see your name in shipped games.
For indie studios: Quickly access professional art, audio, or QA resources at minimal time and cost, accelerate iteration, and discover future partners for the industry.More Than Just Missions – The GGJ Ecosystem Keeps Growing
From weekend jams to sustained creative practice, GGJ continues to witness small ideas grow into big futures. For example, jammer Joseph Makonge and his team turned long nights, jam excitement, and ambitious ideas into something much larger than a weekend project: Ubuntu Universe, a Kenyan indie studio. Their current title, Soraha, is an offlinefirst learning game designed for Kenyan students facing unreliable internet access or lack of traditional educational support. This is a powerful example of “small projects” nurturing “big impact.”
Meanwhile, GGJ celebrates resilience in its community. In Indonesia, Agate Academy, when organizing GGJ Next for the first time, found inperson signups difficult due to a lack of prior regional awareness. The team pivoted to a fully virtual event – and 30 students joined, turning a potential setback into a successful first step for GGJ Next in Indonesia. These stories show that with the right opportunity and support, challenges can become launchpads.
